I listen to the German versions, I was weird in the 1980s... I got to meet many of the artists and went to many clubs and concerts. Very few left an impression on me like Lisa Lisa:

The band performed at a club and I went backstage to meet her. She was very short and smiled a lot. Unlike many others I met, she was unpretentious and did not seem to be taking 'medication' so our conversation was deeper than I've had with others. In the video above, she is seen in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (a borough of New York City) and only blocks from where I lived. She is from the neighborhood and of Puerto Rican descent but spent high school in Florida.
