Hey guys,
Since a few people have asked I decided to go ahead and post this tutorial that I found at Total Navy. I would have just posted how I did it but I would essentially be ripping off this guys idea and making it look like my own.

I also bought the brass pedestals from the same place.
The only things that I do differently is that I don't add the little brass rods in the middle of the dowels and I don't make those sleeves. I make it a tight enough fit that I don't need them.
All of those bases can be bought at any craft store and then stained whatever color you like.
