Just thinking out loud really but at what point does using pre painted PE style instrument panels become cheating ?...or sort of defeating the object ?
I have just used one of these on my Tempest and i feel like i took the easy way out, i took a photo and and i just thought, I didn't do that i bought it and stuck it in there..

I totally agree with the first sentiment but not the second. It is definitely cheating. It also points to the way where models are headed. Yes, I bought the panel and stuck it there. Any other detailing is either my own or paid for (resin, etch, or printed). Depending on what the goal is, it either is defeating the object or not. I am over 50 and my eyes and hands aren't what they used to be. Sadly, my expectations haven't deteriorated as the sight and dexterity have so this is a way to at least get closer to the finish of a model.

Now, the panels I bought aren't just pre-painted... they are pre-assembled. Look at the unassembled panel from Tamiya's Thunderbolt (Early D) and compare it to Yahu's Late Thunderbolt panel. One sees the progression.

Don't get me wrong, its not a criticism, its just throwing a question out there. My eyesight is OK but i need glasses to see what i didn't need glasses to see 10 years ago :) I suppose I just have to do a build with out the PE and see if i can make a job of it.

I just saw that. I would have waited on the Henschel for a non-zimmed if I would have known so I could do a later version. Oh well - Now I need to get another one! :yipee

As to the prepainted PE that Eduard puts out, it is a bit of both ways. I got it for use in my 1/32 Revell Ju-88. I found that some of the parts needed to be painted over a little to get them to look right. The printing process was a smidge off on the color compared to the rest of the cockpit. I found that the instruments looked pretty good though. Especially when I took some 0.003 clear styrene (yeah, really thin stuff) and placed it between the panel faces and the panel and instrument bezels. That thin piece of clear gave it a LOT more depth and the super smooth surface really replicated the instrument glass in an awesome way. I hate the self adhesive stuff that Eduard does and remove the adhesive myself before use.

As for cheating, it is no more cheating than using a decal. If it improves the appearance more than what you would have by doing it another way, it is a win as far as I am concerned. :good:

An unwanted acquisition = a very badly abscessed tooth that I'm taking 2 antibiotics for and Tylenol 3s to keep the pain to a manageable level. What really bugs me is that i saw a dentist last month and in JUly ab out this very same tooth because I knew this would happen. however the dentist couldn't see what the problem was either time and tapping the teeth didn't produce any pain. Spent 9 hours at the ER Monday just to see the doctor for 10 minutes during which she confirmed my diagnosis and treatment - I had one of these a year or two ago and knew the symptons as soon as it started aching Saturday night. I was hoping to make it through to Tuesday when my dentist would be open again after thanksgiving Monday. I'm thnkful there was a doctor to see.

On the bright side. A buddy of mine in the U.S.A. emailed me yesterday to tell me that he got me the 1/28 scale Revell kit of the Sopwith Camel i was looking for. He's going to send it to me this week. It'll be great fun to build it.

Cheers

Federico sent me this to review but I do not have a Takom 1/16th scale FT-17, or variant, in my stash.

The decals are great and now to find photographs of the originals to see how well the artwork matches.

Those decals look cool Saul.
Got some new ref books from Valiant Publishing. I think I still have a Macchi 202. Also some of the newest Echelon decals. I was pleasantly surprised by the street signs for the Ukraine as I thought they were decals. Instead they are coloured PE. WOW would be a good descriptor I think.

Also Dave Youngquist has swnt his contribution from The Last Cavalry for the CTA3 prizes. A 1/16 figure of Micheal Wittmann. Thanks Dave.
