I have search most of my extensive library on the spitfire an in my opinion this is an anomaly that may have been fitted in the morning to get the aircraft out for this publicity shot and removed and painted strait after. This is one of a series of staged publicity shots of 19sqn in 1939 at RAF Duxford taken of the same line up from various angles.
I've already talked myself out of it, don't want to mask a canopy again. I find it about as interesting as track links. 
I just notice that AC doesn't have a AC Code on it. Maybe it was literally a WIP rolled out for the glam shot?
