iPad woes

OK Then, I pulled this off the original thread so not to hijack it.

:vmad :vmad :vmad
OK then, SOMEONE...bought a brand new iPad Air for her school work (don't know what work you can do on those things but anyway). Nice device and great screen. I notice it sitting on the kitchen counter so I opened it up and fired it up. Got prompt for configuration like when that recent service pack went out. So I closed it and didn't think about it. About a week later, I notice it still sitting there. I open it again, battery is dead, plug it in and a little later check it, still getting the setup prompt like before. I close it and leave it again. About a week later I pick it up again, still same, she hasn't touched it. This has been 3 weeks like this!

So...we had to go out of town for a Doc appointment last week so I thought I'd grab that one instead of mine because it has data service on it. I fire it up and notice how dirty the screen is, so I cleaned it, and cleaned, and cleaned, then I notice those spots are not dirt. :blink :blink

They are SCRATCHES! DEEP scratches. Like SOMEONE, placed something in the case between the glass and keyboard, something like, oh I don't know, a SPIRAL BOUND NOTEBOOK :frantic !

Really I don't know what it was but the quotes I've gotten have been $180-200 for repair. Of course I don't have Applecare on it because it cost...$100... :bang head :bang head :bang head

I was thinking I'll try to buff it out, I got the sanding pads and polish but like I said, these are really deep scratches. :bang head :bang head :bang head

Yikes.

I guess I should be more careful, I use mine primarily for sculpting, so it's usually deep in filings, chips and tools. I always assumed glass would stand up to abuse.

I believe that is a GLASS type display. You will most likely only make it worse. It could be some of that Dow Corning Gorilla Glass, but that could be really messed up with trying to polish out the scratches.

You could try a thin coat of Future on the surface to fill the scratches.

I did see someone using one for a chopping board. If you see a WIP shot from me using it for my new cutting mat you'll know how the repair job went. :rotf

I was thinking Future too but then was wondering if you were ever to use any screen cleaning solutions if it would have the same effect on Future that Windex does?

Well in that case I'd have to re seal it with future.

The news today, all classrooms are getting Chromebooks. :bang head
So now this thing will be used even less. I'll put it on the shelf with the Kindle and Nook that never get used but were must haves.

We are an Apple-Centric Family. If one of our pieces aaas treated that way... someone would be buying their own Chromebook... BTW they are useless as balls on a brass monkey.

If you want you can send me the Air... I need to replace carol's computer, which the cat knocked a vase of flowers over.... :coolio

May I suggest you give the Kindle to somebody that truly loves reading. My mum baught herself an Kindle last year My sister adds new books for her the whole time My mum absalutely loves it I must say I wish I had an paperwhite myself not that I have had time to read or build models the last year :bang head (Those are my only true time wasting loves other than my family)

Yep, ask any techy geek and that's the trend. Samsung is the way to go, of course at work they are going to the Windows Surface now...better management in Active Directory world than what we can do with Samsungs.

Well I guess I need to follow up on this.

I took the iPad to a local shop, heard they repair the glass. First quote I got from another place was $200. This place said $150 but...the guy started looking at it, flicked the top corner and started pulling off the protective cover. :facepalm :facepalm :facepalm

I felt like a fool. :smack

I told him I ain't gonna tell him I work in IT. I never realized there was a cover on it. So I bought a new one from him, I know I paid too much for it but hey, he did fix it. :geek

LOL! I thought it odd that a simple spring would gouge glass. BTW, I've got one of these on order for my iPad: Clam Case

woooo...nice! I like that, one issue i've had with some keyboards is you really can't type well on them, that one looks good! Thanks Chuck, something else for Santa's list. Think I'm going to commandeer the new one, especially now it's "fixed". :rotf

For those of you who read off a table... try BookBub... cheap books... real cheap!

I think I'm going to open an iPad repair/remove packaging stand. :silly:

In terms of Apple, yes expensive compared to other options, but in my head, well worth it. The Macbook Pro I'm using for this is at least 7 years old and still works beautifully. I only stuck in an extra memory card over that time, just because they were cheap and I was trying out an animation program that needed a huge amount of ram. It runs Painter and Photoshop without fail.

If you can avoid the 'have to have the newest' pitfall, they'll last a long time.
