G scale locomotive.

Bashing a G scale steam locomotive. This engine was a 4-6-0 Bachmann "toy train". I shortened the frame to turn it into a 2-4-0 Porter. I made the boiler from a spray paint can wrapped with styrene. The steam dome is PVC pipe glued up and turned on the lathe. It seemed to do the job so I'll make the sand dome the same way. I'll scrathbuild the cab. I found a tender on ebay cheap that I'll do some modifications to. I plan on running it with radio control, which looks like the way of the future for powering model railroad engines. Anyway it's just going to be a fun project for me!

Something wasn't straight with the hack job I'd done years ago when I first started this project, so I've spent a couple of days redoing the frame. Looking much better now. While I was at it I decided to cut away the solid plastic between the frames, it should be open. Pics with the cab are for inspiration only. The scratchbuilt one will be shorter from front to back. I can't hide the motor, but painted black with the driver wheel axle leaf spring added

as well as other frame details might make it disappear enough.

The distance from the back of the steam chest to the front driver wheel was to great and really bothering me. I shorted the frame another 1/2". Much better now and more like what a little 2-4-0 should look like. Shortening the side rods to compensate was no big deal.

This is a static model right? Looks like it could work for real. :popcorn
It's a running model, on G scale track. I'm installing a Piko receiver and 14.8v rechargeable battery pack that's hid inside the tender.
Radio control eliminates the need for electric track power. Rusty, dusty rails are ok now!.

G scale is "Garden scale" model railroading, right? Do you have an outside layout as well?

My 20 dollar ebay tender arrived. It's a good candidate for some major hacking up! I'll shorten the length a couple of inches, about four ft in the real world. That will still give me plenty of room for the receiver and Battery. It came with an old sound board kit that will be taken out. The bonus is the light. The tender I'm bas

ing mine on didn't have one but, with some detailing this light is a perfect candidate for the loco's head lamp.
