Dragon Tiger I Mit Zimmerit

Iron Mike

Master At Arms And Resident Curmudgeon
Hello All! There have been so many shelf queen revivals lately that I decided to pull my old Tiger out and see where I was with it. I started this build last year, getting sidetracked by my StuG III build and then then Brummbar, then the KV1. You get the picture. My main holdup with this kit was the brass (imagine that!) and since I have had some practice, this one shouldn't be too difficult, huh? I was actually farther along than I remembered, a nice surprise! Anyway, a guy CAN'T have just one project on the bench at a time anyway!

I originally planned to lose a couple of the fenders, but found some reference pictures of 12 of the Third Kompanie, s.PzAbt. 505. so back on went the fenders and I completed the turret and misc. pieces before paint.

I got the dry transfer set from Archer, a very cool,I might add for the markings and intend to order a set of Friuls rather than use the kit offerings. This kit fits and builds up well so far. Thanks for dropping by! :D

Re:DRAGON TIGER I MIT ZIMMERIT

Nice going. B) I still think the Tiger 1 is the best and meanest looking Tank of WW2. Now don't put it back on the shelf again. Put it in the paint shop.
Keep it up.

Re:DRAGON TIGER I MIT ZIMMERIT

Thanks Adam! I did make some headway today, got the beast into the paint booth. I think the barrel is too light, but I think it will darken with the graphite rub Viper_MP suggested. Here's the reference picture..

The coming washes should help the zimmerit show up better and I still have all the tools and accessories to add. Thanks for looking, any comments appreciated.

Hi Mike.

I think that I gotta agree with Adam. There is just something about a Tiger I , and you have a nice one going there. Also, is the zimmerit supposed to still be on the turret where the knight is going to be. I know that on the King Tigers the crews scratched the zimmerit off before they painted the knights, but I am not sure about the Tiger I's.

Tony, thanks partner! Good to see you're making headway on your double header, hope mine turn out as well.

Gary, the reference pictures I've found of this tank all have the zimmerit under the knight, so that's the way I'm headed. I have several pix of the King Tiger where the knight is in a "box" where the zimm is gone, that's another day. The Archer Tiger Mix #3 set has two red knight sets, so maybe the extras will find their way to a future Royal Kitty build.

I used my Tamiya Weathering Master Gunmetal to add the metallic to the barrel, turned out pretty well, I think.

I stuck the road wheels on to take to Thursday's club meeting and put the exhaust covers on.

Lookin good, Mike. I really like the barrel. Where'd you get the idea for that? LOL
From my ol' buddy and rezident fountain of knowledge! I thank you VERY much!!

Thank you, Dave and Tony! This has been fun reviving this long stalled project!

Mike,
Pretty sweet looking kitty you got there...
Make sure it doesn't cough up a fur ball
It it does, make sure it's aimed at some Allied armor.
Looks really nice so far.

Hello again!! After several weeks of inertia (work), I have finally made some progress!! Using Tony's tip of using straight pins instead of the wire supplied with the Friul tracks, I built both sets and weathered them with Black4Tracks. Using Archer dry transfers, I applied the numerals to the barrel and the right side Red Lancer. Proceeding to the left side, I rubbed down the transfer, only to have it peel off! Yikes!! Fortunately, Archer provides a second transfer, so I carefully removed the rest of the damaged transfer and started again. Unbelievably, the SAME thing happened to my LAST Lancer! Completely aggravated, I ordered a set of Techmod decals from Squadron. These arrived in time to get them applied prior to our monthly club meeting without incident. I applied a couple coats of Games Workshop Purity seal and began the wash process. Using SIN Industries The Filter Tan for tritonal, I applied two very light washes overall, followed up with a burnt umber oil pin wash. I still have some miscellaneous parts and weathering to do, but here's the result.

Thank you, gentlemen,I appreciate the kind words! I still need to add some bits and weathering, so please stay tuned. :peace

Thanks, Randy! Yes, the washes add much needed depth to the colors and bring out the zimmerit's texture.

Laura, it always makes me happy when a modeler of your caliber and knowledge likes my work! Thank you!!

Terry, see the above comment, it applies to you as well.

I don't have to work until later tomorrow, so might get some more done then. Cheers!!
