DML 1/35 Flakpanzer IV Kugelblitz

Hi Adam nice camo . If you use blue tack for the putty you won't have any problems getting the tape to stick to it.

Cheers, Christian B)

Nicely done,Adam. (y) (y) (y)

Really looking forward to the groundwork with figures included!

Greetings,Ron.

Thanks guys. Got one more thing left to paint, and then its on to weathering. I have to do all the little polka dots on this thing, which will hopefully get done tomorrow evening. Then maybe Thursday for the Future, and then probably Saturday for the start of the weathering.

Hi Adam, can't believe I missed this thread. I am also busy with this kit (for about 4 years now) and i'm just about at the track stage. For your info, the only indication that this vehicle saw service (3 were completed) is in the Hungarian theater in Winter 1944. After the war they found the ball turret and part of a destroyed chassis which they believe may be in storage in russia. A ball turret was also discovered somewhere in Germany suggesting that either one of the other three vehicles had been stripped or there was an intention of producing another one. I had a news paper clipping which showed the ball in the forrest but i'll be damned if I can find it now. I'll continue looking and post when I find it. Your 'Blitz it really looking top notch by the way.

I know the images you're referring to Geoff, I've run across them on the net. There's a ball on display in a museum somewhere, dont remember where, and then the turret ring from a destroyed Kugelblitz in a forest somewhere.

This is the ball thats on display in a museum in Rendsburg, Germany

And this is the turret ring from a destroyed unit. In this image, you can see where the drivers hatch would have been. I dont have a location though. It says "Spatenbergského (?) Castle" but I cant get anything from that w/ Google, so I dont know.

That's weird, that tree it's leaned up on doesn't look that old yet you can see what appears to be where it has grown around the point the ring is leaned against the tree. Don't know what type of tree that is but maybe a very slow growing one?

Good stuff Adam!

Greetings Adam;

Very nice MK IV.......... Excellent paint, and construction... (y)

I ran across these photos when I was doing Ref. on my Panther Ausf. F.
It is strange what you run across on a search.

These two photos where taken when the allies entered the Daimler Ben's
Facility in 1945. Note the snow on the ground.

I suspect..... this is a Panther Collen turret.

These two photos are of a Kugelblitz inner turret (the spherical part). Supposedly three complete vehicles were built and did see action but I have only seen the trials turrets and the series of photos of the one found in the forest.

If I remember correctly, they used a Panther turret ring (which is larger than the std PzIV turret ring), to mount the gun pod, which is why the driver & radio operator hatches are turned at an angle on the top of the superstructure. If they had remained in the std position square to the front of the superstructure, the hatches wouldnt open, so they had to turn them.

Nice paint work Adam and with the weathering I suspect it's going to get even better. ;)

For anyone that's done a paint scheme like this, how did you do the dots on it? I tried to airbrush them, and it just didnt work at all. Im thinking about just carefully brush painting them on, but wanted some input from others.

When I did my Tiger II I just dabbed with a paint brush. My reasoning was some lackey would be put to work with a regular paint brush and the dots wouldnt be all the same or exact. So I just pretended to be the lacky and dotted away.

When I posted a like to Kunihito's fabulous Kugelblitz build, he offered these reference links that may be of help:

Way back in one of Shepard Paines dio tutorials I think, they had an article on spotting german stuff. He suggested taking an index card and punching random holes some single, some in groups and some together ect, and spraying 2 inches above the model -he was using a rattle can in the pic- of course i couldnt do it as nice, but it kinda worked!

Its polka time! Polka dots that is.

I finally got around to putting the dots on my tank, and I have to say I'm fairly happy w/ the results. Just took the end of a paint brush, dipped it in the paint, and let a couple drops call onto a pallet, then thinned it w/ a couple drops of paint, and then painted 'em on by hand, in a fairly random pattern.

Let it dry tonight, and then tomorrow I may clear coat it. Now I'm getting into the stuff that really worries me. I've done detail washes before, but thats it, I've never tried any serious weathering, so I'm not sure what to do from here. So it'll be quite a bit of trial & error.
