DKM Tirpitz in Norway - Deck Desaster!

still fighting my hangover ( :java ) nothing could have stopped me from doing my date shots for my entry - the plan is to depict Tirpitz in a norwegian fjord, a huge shadowbox with forced perspective! i can't tell yet if i will suceed in my plan but i'll try my very best and surely will go beyond my usual paths!

so, have a cigarette (if you're a smoker), lean back and enjoy:

the unassembled academy kit with most of the extras planned for this build:

time and date shots:

ok - what do we see in the pics:

- the academy (licensed?!) copy of the old and venerable tamiya kit
- flyhawk pe dkm railings
- trumpeter generic metal chains
- academy wooden deck for Tirpitz
- tamiya 1/350 crew (i was told that the fujimi offering was better - unfortunately the very same day when i picked up my order)
- the white box is a ready to use LED box for lighting the ship's portholes

still missing:

- around 120m of fiber optics with 1mm² diameter (my wallet's already puking when i think of the price!)
- eduard pe for tamiya Tirpitz (ordered and on it's way!)
- pe bending tool (ordered and on it's way!)
- metal gun barrels for the main armament (still undecided if i will add those!)

now to something crucial:

i'm well aware of the fact that no warship anchored or travelled without blackout and fully illuminated like a pleasure boat! i decided to go that way to go beyond my limits, for the effect and because i want to give the shadowbox three different light settings - dawn/sunset, daylight, night and Tirpitz fully illuminated in the night setting should look really cool!

off we go - now it's sanding down the mold lines on bow and stern, then drill out all the portholes in the hull, bending rainguards and glue them in place! (first dull task of this project!)

Sounds exciting Laura - can't wait.
What will be the color theme for the shadow box (time of day?)

i plan three installations of light - bright for daylight, orange for dawn/sunset and blue for night, all with separate switches so that the time of the day can be chosen ...

Re: DKM Tirpitz in Norway

Wow! What an undertaking. And what a couple of brutes up there, are they supervisors?

Laura I know you've been waiting a long time to get started on this, I'm sure we're all going to enjoy this ride. :mpup

Re: DKM Tirpitz in Norway

Hi Laura, I can't wait to see this....I just finished reading Niklas Zetterling & Michael Tamelander's book, TIRPITZ.

I love the shadow box idea and the lighting effects you're planning. I have a stash of fibre optic filiments if you run short. I thought about opening the ports on the Titanic but chickened out when I realized there were over 1,100 of them to drill out. So hollar if you need some, I won't be using mine.

I think you're going to do a band up job on her as everything I've seen you do is top notch. Enjoy your hangover and Happy New Year!! :yipee

Re: DKM Tirpitz in Norway

Which camo scheme are you using?

armament layout on the decks of the kit limits the timeframe from june 1942 - march 1943, so i'll have to go with either paintscheme H or I with the red main turret tops red of scheme I being the only difference between the two schemes ...

scheme H:

Wow! I'm definitely looking forward to this one Laura. Especially the lighting aspect. :popcorn

Re: DKM Tirpitz in Norway

How much of the lay out would differ doing the G-scheme? It's my favorite.

The fitting out-theme is quite cute:

If I only could find better references, it would have been my first choice, regardless on how much work it would take.

Of the ones for your period, I think I would prefere the one with colourful turret tops.

Re: DKM Tirpitz in Norway

just a quick info update for you dudes ...

the ventilation shafts on turret b and c barbettes were cut away and sanded (bismarck feature, not to be found on tirpitz), anchor chains are cut away and sanded and then the most dullest work i ever did in my modelling career occupies me since sunday evening - the portholes!

drilling them out was really easy and quick work, i was quite pleasantly surprised!

making rainguards for them was quick and easy work too but gluing them in place is sheer horror! if you ever want to do that, do not take copper wire but steel wire (lesson learned the hard way!) and better be relaxed as relaxed can be! there are 94 portholes in the hull only what means that you have to be completely calm each time and you better know now that 99% of them will set rock solid in the wrong angle and have to be readjusted ...

... pics will follow as soon as i'm finished with the rainguards! :zen

Re: DKM Tirpitz in Norway

This sounds like a great idea. As you've started already I'm sure you will present this boat at Oberschleißheim :)

 that was a good one martin! o'heim 2013 maybe but surely not o'heim 2012 ... this will take a very long time to finish! i haven't glued a single piece in place yet and still don't have the urgently needed pe to make this a decent looking ship ...
