Colossus-Building the Bismarck-Trumpeter 1/200th

The PE on these ships can really add so much depth to the build. If it doesn't drive you crazy first.

Excellent job Laurence! Looking forward to some more.

That is true Paul, there is a ton of PE to be added. Driving me nuts. Today I dropped a PE part on the carpet twice, found it twice and finally managed to glue it in place :frantic

Looks Great Laurence!

Bob

Thank you Bob - this is simply adding pieces and following instructions. I have some ideas for sections where the kit (and detail kit) do not provide for, but I need my rigging wire to arrive in the mail first. I have ordered EZ Line fine - 0.15mm that is.

The real creative bit will come when I do the water though - whenever I do research on the ship, if I find an image along the lines of what I have in mind for the water, I save it. Here's a sample ....

I will aim for something like that ..... let's see how it all works out. Getting waves like that done ....would look kinda nice I guess :D

Great work Laurence!
Lots of fiddly bits but you are moving forward , that's the main thing. We all get bogged down with the daily grind so just relax and let it progress as you are ready. Don't get to concerned with the hull painting....like I mentioned to you earlier, the paint job on something this large, immersed in hardcore weather conditions and salt water will not be a perfect one.
Treat the hull like a really large German tank and just scale down the effect. I recommend a base coat in acrylics with a patchy airbrushed over-spray in a variety of greys and finished with grey oil paints using a medium flat brush with hardly any paint to simulate the top layer of hand painting and deterioration.
Contrast shading with darker streaks using oils or pigments from the top down would also add to the effects, but keep them light and scattered.

Thanks Ian, that is great advice - so far I have used the acrylics and a coat of matt varnish (Vallejo). Once I have the base and cover done, I will remove all the dust and then start adding the effects. I will go easy on the effects, will try to make them very subtle, because the Bismarck was a brand spanking new ship at the time. Diorama will show her during sea trials in the Baltic. There would have been streaks and traces of rust here and there, but nothing too drastic like I did on the submarine.

Still a way to go until then, but very valuable advice and always good to have it in advance, gives me time to visualise it in my head before doing it.

Cheers mate,

Laurence

Time for a minor update... I am working on the base for the diorama, trying to align everything and make sure it all makes sense ...

Managed to do the cover - nothing too crazy, just a cover for protection

and then painted, it will be inside for a while, wife not 100% happy with that unfinished look...

When not working on the base, decided to keep myself busy with some minor PE work ....
