What i did for vacation.
its mainly for added storage but is is the right ride height for a sit down workbench.
Just to follow up on this, I said here I want to find a suitable paint rack. Did some googling this AM and only found all these various laser cut kit type that I don't have good history with.
So I thought to myself...Self, why not build one from scratch. I have enough scrap wood and junk all around that I should be able to work one out.

I figure I need several levels for the standard acrylic bottle stuff, Vallejo, AK, and what not then some that fit the bottled stuff like the Tamiya's. Maybe deep enough for two rows?

What else should I plan for y'all?

Hey Bob, I built mine out of acrylic that I bought at the hardware box store. The best one I did was for the Vallejo paints, and it gets used a LOT.

Things to consider:
Being able to see/ read the color of and/or on the bottles
Basic strength. A lot of bottles on it will make it heavy. My Vallejo rack is actually strong enough and stable enough that I move it around a bit.
Flexibility for different paints. Pick a paint bottle size/brand to fit in the rack, then see what other brands are close to that size. You can't make the holding parts too oversize as the bottles will slide around and fall out. Too small and the bottles will not fit. Make it to fit reasonably some fixed brands bottles.
Here is a paint rack I made that fits MRP and Alclad II paints along with another brand that is now discontinued and the paints are turning to gloop.
It works great for the Alclad paints and MRP. All the Vallejo have their own rack now.

Here is the paint rack for just Vallejo paints. I have a number of the larger thinner and primer bottles and those are no problem to deal with.
This works well at least for me.

Just some ideas to help with your design and use issues.
Note the MRP paints also fit the Vallejo rack just fine.

Yeah right, googling for "a paint rack". Quickly followed by deleting cache and browser history. 😄

Cheers,

Yes, my wife learned that today as I worked on her garden and she was arguing that I am doing what I was doing wrong. Wanting to prove me wrong, she did a Google search. I asked to see the results of "trimming a bush" but she didn't let me see!

Yeah too many of the pre done paint racks take up too much desk space and don't hold enough paint. That is why I built my own and they have a 5 -6 inch deep base and are 24+ wide and quite tall.

The work benches I've been building are 2x4' Really simple. The first one I did is higher because I intended for it to be the electrical/mechanical bench. Working on full size parts and whathave you.
So I think the paint rack will be 4' wide and I can go up as far as I want within reason.

This is the current situation. The drafting table is over 3' deep and 5+' wide, just too big for me to reach something on the wall. I really hate the idea of trashing this table because the drawing board tilts up, it's very nice but who in the world would need this type of drafting table in this day of CAD? Thought I just had typing this, the drawing board it self is a nice wood, I could use it for the bench top just cut it down to 2 foot deep...could keep it 5' wide... :hmm:

If I do this right I could get rid of that smaller rolling cart I have some stuff stacked on.
