All Righty ... What's on the bench today?

Re: All Righty ... What are you doing today ?

I put together my new Ryobi table saw! I had to give away my Dad's table saw when we moved out of our house and have missed having it. I love woodworking and especially making my own bases for my models. I can do that again now! (y) (y)

Work sucks... :bang head :bang head :bang head :bang head :bang head

There...feel better.

Sucks even worse not to work.... ;)

A question for you on the other side.
How important is education? Compared to experience? Just curious, since I have some of the first, but quite a lot of the latter, but can't even get the most basic IT work.:(

Re: All Righty ... What are you doing today ?

Mate unless you have a peice of pretty paper saying ya can do something, regardless if you actually can, bosses don't want to know. It's stupid. :hmmm
Give me a worker who can show me he can,not show me a piece of paper.

Sorry,my rant for the day.

Lets see now, 30 odd years experience in the air force trumped by a university degree ended a job of curator at Air Force museum. No one would hire a fellow with over 6 years experience in IT because it was all learned on the job and not backed by paper. Then lets throw in being broken and older and the job market shrivels up even more. The world is whacked as far as I can see.
Could you start your own business doing IT for small stores and companies who might not need full time IT guys? Networking and data storage and backup etc? Network topology and design with basic maintenance thrown in? Might be a nice niche market waiting to be tapped.

Re: All Righty ... What are you doing today ?

Let's see ...

I have a BA in Management, a BSEd in Social Studies Education, MA in Occupational Safety. 32 years military experience, the last 8 being in Hospital Administration (for which I have an Associates thanks to the USAF).

I can't find a job in any management field, even though I have managed $1,000,000 budgets, 80 employees and commanded a company in combat. I am too old... No one is looking for experience or ability, they want youth and lower salaries. Teaching? What a joke... Youth is all they want. I am the perfect teacher... Proven track record and HATE teacher unions. And, as far as a gig in a hospital goes.... I am the wrong gender etc.

So, today I work for 46% of what I made as a teacher working as an eligibility specialist (I do intake interviews for people wanting welfare) for Cuyahoga County, Ohio.

However, if Yo'Mama gets re-elected I will have fantastic job security...

Right you are, tough times all over.

Honestly I think the biggest road block I face is not having a college education. Even if it were in some unrelated field, I think just having that diploma would open other doors for me. At 48 years old i'm not interested in tacking on another $50,000 of debt to get a job that pays 25% more than what I'm making now.

If this business cycle turns around soon, I may go back to business for myself.

Niche is good James. When I was in business previously I focused on mortgage and small banks sectors back in the subprime hayday. Put lots of bread on my table and was good while it lasted. Sadly I didn't have the foresight to get into the bankruptcy/foreclosure niche!

Off sight data storage and virtualization is where it's at right now.

Re: All Righty ... What are you doing today ?

Education means nothing if there is too much experience attached to it. I had to dummy down my resume to get a job with a 53% pay cut. Benefits are fabulous though but it is non union so I am at the whim of the supervisors.

Regards,

Well I walked 6 hour shift on Main street today, the City is having a fair type thing going on. Really nice car show about 200 plus cars showed up. Took some pictures. Bugged some hot rodders that where in from the Denver CO area (which is fun to do when your in uniform. The look on their faces at first is priceless. then they find out your a Hot Rodder at heart and everything is cool.

That sounds even worse than here.:(

I tried the own company route already. Almost made me go into the wall completely, both financially and by stress. Didn't have a day in two years where I didn't have anxiety about something. Money, customers, bookkeeping or to little work. Will not go down that road again, if I can help it.

Today, the mix of being self thought, above 40 and a overweight seem to be the perfect recepy for unemployment.

Regards,

Sounds like what I have been recommended. They want me to cut out everything that isn't exactly for the position, or the believe it might be scaring the employer away, 'cause "they don't want over-qualified people".
Isn't that up to me? My point is that many I know like to work with as little stress as possible. I've worked manual labour with PhD's, who did enjoy their work, and where the most loyal employees you could imagine.

Ah but that's something we all can do something about, the overweight part. I got some major lb/kgs to drop and have felt that has been a factor in some of my relationships with the folks up the food chain.

Maybe we need a Modelers' Alliance Fatboy Challenge? :coolio

You're On! I already lost 12 (had to cut 4 inches off my belt) but need to lose quite a bit more to fit into my expensive suits... luckily, they are coming back in fashion after a decade!
:coolio

As if we need more incentive, one can consider this side effect of weight loss.
:woohoo:
