All Righty ... What's on the bench today?

Day 5 without my desktop computer at work. Windows failed to open last Monday. Today, the phone in my office stopped working. I think they fired me last week and emailed me the notice, just kidding. I did call our IT department last week to check on my computer and the office manager asked if I had gotten the email. :bang head

Do you know how difficult it is to make an Excel document on an iPad? Thank goodness I have my personal iPad. I would be screwed without it.

Well I've worked on the Willy's power wagon all day ... But On the bench still ... :ro: :dude's

C&C - Welcome off to the Garage ........... :soldier

It is not really on the bench but my new vinyl cutter came in and is ready to go. I cut an order last night and the thing sounds like R2-D2! G2-M2, Gator's Masks.

Vinyl cutter

Well I finally went and splurged on the parts to build a new computer. What does it have to do with modelling? I make drawings, and a buch of other things for this hobby of mine. So i's another one of my major tools.

And about like every other thing I build there is going to HAVE to be a modification done to get it together reliably. :bang head :bang head :bang head

It just happens to be the heatsink surface on the processor :blink

That surface is supposed to be FLAT, so what did Intel do? There is a hole in one corner (supposed to be there) that has a raised boss around it that isn't supposed to be there!

What that means is that the heatsink ont set flat on the processor, the processor will then overheat, and poof. Exchanging it would take more time and could end up with another part, same problem.

So I will just lap the surface down with my diamond hone and then suceedingly finer sandpaper on glass like the 'puter geeks have been doing for a number of years.

:facepalm

I just guess I am destined to mod everything I build. :beer

That's what I am going to be doing for a little bit.

I just guess I am destined to mod everything I build.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

I feel the same way 99% of the time.

A routine clutch change & timing chain service...+ a side of "since I'm in there" (replace con rod bolts w/ ARP hardware)...find metal chunks in oil pump...pull head find scored cylinder walls...pull crank, find scored main bearings...find missing timing chain sprocket tooth...bore out block (oversized pistons)...update headgasket (more compression)...ID cams (end up being an aggressive high lift cam)...upgrade/lighten valvetrain to handle cam...upgrade intake manifold & header to work better w/ cam...custom ECU programming for engine changes...while motor is out decide to ditch the factory 3 channel ABS and update to newer 4 channel ABS system from a newer Passat...since the interior is pulled up for the ABS swap, replace heater core...can't pull dash because prior windshield company "glued" the windscreen to dashboard...remove windscreen to remove dash...

Well, you get the idea. :rotf It can be troublesome at times, but in the end you know it's put together to your standards...not someone trying to make it to the end of the day on a Friday.

And yeah, that car is still a long ways from being back on the road. I only owned it for 4 months before the clutch started slipping and the avalanche began. :bang head

Ahh yes the good old days. Basically you danced around a bad word VW. I used to be a die hard Vdub person. Had many of the old air cooled variety and loved them. The water pumpers though are bad news. Won't ever own another one, but the old 77 beetle in storage might one day rise again.

Biggest problem I am having with the 'puter build is the horrible manuals that everything has. A little corcuit info or something other than stupid lame drawings that are not informative would be a big plus. I hate having to guess about power cables like on the video card. Is 1 PCI-E cable with the double 8 pin end good enough, or should it be 2 separate cables. The install guide has 6 lines of instruction that could apply to any card, 3 tiny pictures that are wortless in a flipout that has this written in about 25 languages. :bang head :bang head :bang head

Well Paul without pictures of what your building I can't help you, I build all my stuff, normally if it is compatible it will work. But the instructions can be vague. Try tech support if all else fails & manufactures web site. I tell you to call me at work, when I get there, around 10 AM central time, my work number is on my profile. Good luck.

Piet that's some mighty fine looking plaster ... looks very good excellent job (y)

Kenny those vinyl cutters are the bomb ... I've been wanting one myself ... Congrats ... (y)

Oh and Helios ... Hang in there One to One models are the Best ... :beer

Thanks for the offer Gerry. I knew how it was supposed to work and all, it wasn't so much assembly as being able to be sure it was assembled correctly. Which it fired up and just ran. :D (y)

Then decided to add a second SSD drive and set them up Raid0. Took longer to find the blink'n settings in the bios than it took to load Win81 and all the drivers. Bottleneck was the dvd drive reading the disks (the machine is that fast). Trying to load pics but Pbucket broke their app and it wont load squat right now.

:vmad :vmad

So far new 'puter is golden though the manuals are so much toilet paper.

This is a nice little cutter. It has most of the features that our big ones at work have. I haven't really put it through its paces yet. I need to finish building the stand for it first.

Glad to hear, you got her running, Mine seems to reset Ok, just took awhile running better now although I haven't gone through it to see what windows change, it removed lots of stuff.

Tables are nice Kenny... I need one for my Drill press.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, I received my C-600 stake bed today, so we can start to work on the wild willy's again. It comes with a 361 Ford Motor but I'm thinking the willy's pick-up, blown motor may be a better choice ...

This evening after work I was able to finish the stand for my vinyl cutter. This weekend I'll get a coat of paint on it.
