All Righty ... What's on the bench today?

Made some progress on my 1/35 Tamiya German 8 ton halftrack.

I had to rework the cargo bay floor because I had it a tad too low. I used the Tamiya 88 mm ammo crates stacked 3 high to make sure the opening is the right height. Right now there are a further 3 ammo boxes stacked in the rear upper doors too.

I also cut out the rear lower door because I'm going to build the spare wheel stowage bin there and place a spare wheel in it. Thanks for the image of that area James. Thanks for the extra tires and wheels Chukw.

There are 6 short drawers or bins on tthe left rear side of that large opening in the rear. I'm using 3 spare German crates with the metal strapping and wood grain sanded off. Here is an original crate and 2 that have been sanded and are ready to be cut to size to fit in the back of the halftrack. Each crate gives me 2 drawers/bins.

Next I'll be adding the spare tire bay and then building the supports for those 6 drawers/bins.

Bonus.

I needed some more tread plate. I placed some tinfoil over the rear deck of a different Tamiya German 8 ton halftrack and then burnished it with a rubber handle on my hobby knife. Voila! More treadplate.

Cheers from Peter

It depends on the tracks, but I have to tell you, James, I don't drill all my Friuls. Especially since I started using brass wire instead of that stuff they send with the tracks. Stay sane. :good:

Mike I think I drilled 2 or 3 tracks before. Never had issues. The BMP-1 track I have only has dimples. Its not drilled through. I finally got 1 side drilled. Starting on the other side.
James

I understand your pain James. Bought an old Dragon JagdTiger a few weeks ago. It is the Porche version and was a decent deal. Finally gave in and decided to start building on it. Started on the tracks as the tracks on this version are different from all the other Tiger 2 varients. The Friul set I ordered isn't even close.

Each link pair has one main link that can fit either side, then one medium center piece to connect the main links, THEN 3 little thin skinny links on the outer sides (or maybe 4). Spent part of the weekend and a couple of nights cleaning up all the mold lines and ejector marks. Now am thinking about maybe drilling them all out and articulating the track. The qualiy shape and fit are good enough that I should be able to do so. It is the prospect of drilling about 5 or 600 parts that is daunting, and the main and mid links will have to be finish drilled with a longer skinny bit to finish them off. :blink Finished though it will be awesome! :woohoo:

Will also have to add the zimmerit later by hand as the kit has none and the Eduard zimmerit PE is garbage. :bang head :bang head

:hmmm .Never understood why they even ever consider making PE zimmerit.
ATAK make very nice (resin) zimmerit

Okay, after all of your tips, suggestions and ideas, I have finally managed to complete the painting and clearcoating of this Saturn V to my relative satisfaction. Here's the pics I promised showing the progression of my work.

I started with some preliminary masking on the lower and middle section of the rocket to block out the areas where this was going to be painted black:

You can see where I also added some "B's" to indicate where I was going to paint this black so I didn't inadvertently mask the wrong area, or neglect to mask another.

Here is the upper part of the rocket with more preliminary masking:

After getting all that done, I completed the masking with additional tape and some paper towels covering the largest white areas:

Then I shot the black. I used my airbrush and it still took an entire bottle of Testor's Model Master Flat Black:

Now while that was drying, I finished the black on the collar of the LEM compartment, assembled the whole thing and tested the fit of the LEM inside. This was also supposed to allow me to see how the 'window' I left in the clear part looks; as well as to see how well the LEM is visible inside. I am quite pleased to see how well it fit:

Another shot with the Command Module in place:

Finally the masking came off the rest of the rocket. It was like unwrapping a Christmas present! I was pretty pleased with how well this ended up looking:

There were a few areas that needed some touchup, but overall the making worked better than I expected.

Next came the decals. The "UNITED" and "STATES" came as two separate decals, so I put the "STATES" on first and lined up the "UNITED" above it to make sure everything looked right:

Next I took the second stage and added it to the first stage and then added the lower stage decals. I put the second stage on first in order to line everything up properly on the lower stage:

After all that, I set it aside to dry. While it was drying, I finished up the Headless Horseman; doing a few things I'd wanted to do to enhance it. I then went back to the Saturn V and applied all the extensive stenciling to the Command Module and set that aside to dry. When everything was ready, I shot a new clearcoat on this whole rocket. When that had dried, I finished up a few more details and then finally, the Saturn V was done!

Here's a teaser pic. This was taken in front of my bathroom door. It was the only place I had an unobstructed place to set this up and shoot the pics:

This and the other three pics are in the "Let's Be Civil" Forum, since this isn't Sci-Fi, and there's no real Space Forum. Since this rocket was used by NASA which is a civilian organization; I felt that the "Let's Be Civil" Forum was the best place for it here.

Also, here is a teaser of the completed Headless Horseman:

He's in Fette's Figures Forums; feel free to check him out too.

I'll be taking these two models along with my Dora rail gun to the Ontario, California Minicon this Saturday. I'm looking forward to the fun!

Thanks all for looking in and enjoying the ride. Comments are welcome.

CORNgrats Mark!! :drinks I'm sure this is a big boost to your enthusiasm about the Ontario show! Glad to see you finished up the rocket& a job well done on it!! (y) (y) Headless horsemen looks great too! Good luck at the show! :drinks :dance

Thanks Ed, and yes it is. I'm really looking forward to showing both of these at the show.

Thanks EJ. It is quite huge. I plan on taking it to the Ontario Minicon this weekend, and then the IPMS Nationals next month. If it doesn't place there, I'll take it to all the other model contests in the area. After that, I'll most likely have to keep it in the box, like I do Dora, unless I can find a hobby Shop that can display it.

Good Luck Mark! (y) A couple places that may be interested in displaying them would be the Midway or, perhaps in Balboa Park... Wouldn't hurt to give 'em a jingle :hmmm

Those are some good ideas, but that is a long haul for me to take it for display. Heck, I want to be able to see them myself occasionally if I have it set up somewhere.
