1/48 Hobby Craft CF-100 Mk IV 'Canuck'

Hi there.

Here a few images of my in-progress build of the Hobby Craft 1/48 scale Avro CF-100 Mk IV 'Canuck' aka 'Clunk' or 'Lead Sled'.

I am doing a lot of kit-bashing and scratch-building on this model. It is nowhere near being finished but I thought some of you might be interested in what I've done to this kit thus far.

Here are eleven images of the work so far. I have many other sub-assemblies in progress too but they are not really far enough along to post any images of.

The canopy is movable as can be seen in two of the images that show it closed and then opened. There is a great deal of work to be done inside the cockpit yet including scratch-building a reflector gun-sight of the type found in Late WW2 British fighters. Hobby Craft does not give you any gun-sight!

I have opened up the starboard engine bay and I am adding the Orenda engine mounts to it. I'm also scratch-building an Orenda engine to go in there. You can see the basic engine in some of the images. I have added the deicer vanes to the engine spinners that will go onto the fronts of the engines.

I will also be building the radar assembly for the nose area. You can see the two parts that will make of the radar bay. A section of the nose still has to be removed from the model to allow me to fit the new nose area.

I am going to open up the dive-brake areas on the wings and then very carefully cut all of the slots in the four dive brakes I cut off of the wings of another CF-100 kit.

The rudder will be movable too.

The landing gear (not shown) will be operable.

The gun-pod in the belly of this model will be removable just like on the actual aircraft. It will have eight 1/35 scale .30 cal machine guns in it to represent the eight .50 cal mgs of the original aircraft. I found out that 1/35 scale .30 cqal mgs make excellent 1/48 scale .50 cal mgs.

Wing armament on the wingtips (the mounts aren't in the images)will positioned near the aircraft and will include two types of rocket pods - the 19 rockets per pod, the 7 rockets per training pod. I will also have the long-range fuel tanks.

More images will follow as work on this model (and sub-models) continues.

The aircraft will be painted in NATO camouflage.

Comments are always welcome.

Cheers from Peter

Cool, I parked one once. And also did my ABDR course on one. Very cool plane. Will watch with interest.

Hi there James.

You have a Hobby Craft CF-100 in your stash don't you? If you want, I can send you some images I took of the final Mk V that ended up at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum located just outside of Hamilton, Ontario. The Mk V is easier to build than the Mk IV because the Mk V doesn't have the gun-sight or the opening in the belly for the guns. The Mk V was strictly rocket-armed.

Cool choice Peter. I built this kit many moons ago. Also in the NATO scheme. Always liked the look of this plane.

I have a couple of books on the old girl but extra pics would never be turned down. Obscuro makes a pit for the 1/72 version but they wouldn't make a 1/48 unless there was interest. Don't know if I have a 1/48 anymore, but one day when my 649 or lotto max retirement plans kick in I'd like to scratch a 1/32 model.
