1/48 Armor after these years, success?

Master at Arms
The Pegasus bridge thread got me thinking about this.

At first there was so much talk about it, but it's been a long time now, has it worked out?

I bought into it, went a bit nuts with AM and stuff on Tamiya's kits, using Armorscale barrels, Voyager PE and a lot of scratch building on a Tiger I and same plus resin hull, etc for the M4, but I never put them together with an AC in a diorama.

At the end of the day, I think it was the figures that put me off. Even as a sculptor, I can get a good face in 1/48, but it's just too small for real expression or detail in uniform and weaponry.

1/35 AC would be my prefered direction in terms of combining genres, but incorporating both on a base is a large project.

For me, it was value. I always felt the 1/35 scale kits gave more for the money and that 1/48 was just a marketing plan. :coolio

How dare you mentioning combining genres! I kid...

Personally I'm not really into one genre over another, I like models (period).

1:35 aircraft will be cool. I really didn't understand the different till I attempted to install 1:32 seatbelts into the 1:35 Bronco Piper.

I've tried a few of the 1/48 armor kits and thought they were mildly cool. But honestly I would rather try them in 1/35. More detail that way. But I do think it is neat to have 1/48 softskin vehicles to add to a plane diorama.

I enjoy them since that is my preferred aircraft scale...I guess my only real complaint is that there still isn't a vast variety of kits...but I've tied them into a handful of vignettes that I wouldn't otherwise have room to display.

Cost is also a bit of an issue...unless you count the Hobbyboss KV-1 and T-34 series and a random Italeri or AFV Club kit, Tamiya is the only real game in town and their cost is not all that different than their bigger cousins...I had a dealer on eBay that I got a whole mess of them for under $20...but he's gone and you are lucky to find them for less than $25-30 now...

I've often thought that 1/48 scale armour was another marketing ploy by Tamiya. I find it interesting that many, many years ago in Canada that 1/32 scale was the scale for armour - what little of it was available. Then Tamiya exploded on the scene with their oddball 1/35 scale that eventually became the stanard scale and 1/32 scale languished.

1/48 scale is nice because so much is available in different formats. You can get armour, aircraft, civilian stuff and even a lot of decently detailed toys in 1/48 scale. Tamiya is releasing a lot of accessories and figures in 1/48 scale.

As far as mixing aircraft and armour in the same diorama goes. I'd probably use 1/48 or even 1/72 scale aircraft with armur to give a forced perspective. After all an aircraft appears quite a bit smaller unless it's overhead or very close to the armoured vehicle.

Cheers

I find that I really like 1/48 vehicles. I've got some interesting little buggers in private sales recently.

Wasn't there a 1:32 Monogram Sherman in 1:32?

Airfix had some nice tanks and cars in 1/32 together with their multipose figure kits in the 70's

I have to say no for the most part. I enjoy 1/48 armor,as it does not take up as much space in my bunk in the big rig. I doubt if Hobby Boss will do anymore 1/48 armor. Their Sherman series is a joke. You have to buy corrected resin hulls and turrets to make them accurate,if you wish.

Then their is Tamiya. On one hand,I am glad they bought that scale back for armor. On the other hand,at times I want to smack them upside the head. Their tow cables are a bad joke. The nylon string that is included with their kits, the ones that come with it,are too large for the cable ends.

Tamiya Shermans do not even come with any tow cables. Hobby Boss is the same. Eventually,I think I just may give up on 1/48 armor. A shame. :(

That could be very useful! Hijack the 1:48 scale thread to 1:32 in 10 post...:rotf

Without a quote, sometimes it's very hard to tell what post people are replying to.

As far as 1/48 scale goes, if it weren't for the fact that my stash and built land forces models are 1/35 I'd seriouslu consider going to 1/48 for the smaller size with reasonable detail, the lower cost of the kit and the greater selection and compatibility with other items. It's interesting seeing that Tamiya often releases something land based in 1/48 before, if they ever do, they release it in 1/35.

Cheers from Peter

I was talking about the 1:32 wrecker Peter.

Realy kinda thinking about that now. :hmmm

The 1/48 armor was great for me to get into armor modeling, back in 2006 I did my 1st serious armor model, and it was a 1/48 Tamiya Tiger,it was less daunting then the full size kit to a newbie.I built quite a few of the Tamiya offerings along with a couple of AFV Club kits.I have since moved on to 1\35 but still enjoy an occasional 1/48

Funny timing, I just got my Monday MMD flyer with a Revell 1/32 M-47 Patton due out soon.
