What I continue to notice (even in/or because of black and white photography) is how every sheet metal panel, every surface, and material is mottled, damaged (sometimes) and weathered. Trying to recreate this look is the real challenge for me in our hobby. The more that I see these photos, the more I am inspired and challenged to try to "get" that look. Maybe you too? :idonno

That SBD has seen some heavy use. Almost looks like the insignia on the left wing has been completely repainted. Almost like it has a black surround as well.

The insignia on the wings probably has been. The navy changed the size and stile several times during the war years.
Also, the color shots always seem to bring out a lot of details not visible in black/white .
I think another reason is that the pictures seem to have poor resolution. This sometimes often become obvious if you can zoom in.

Reminds me of that shot of the P61 in flight, all the mottle and stains you see on the wings, wonder if that's from the oil being thrown from the engine?

Yeah that SBD caught my eye too. Makes me want to model it. The Dauntless was always my far and away favorite AC, but I thought only a Jug would take the weathering an armor modeler like myself can wrap my head around since pristine finishes aren't in my skill set (can't do cars either).
Looks like the rudder was replaced too.
Now I'm hooked (not tail), unless I can score an old AA kit, who currently makes a good SBD in 1/48?

Beautiful photos. I have a book at home about US Naval aircraft with color photos. Not only was I surprised at the wear and tear on the aircraft but on the ships as well. Two photos come to mind of the Essex class Hornet, one of her at the commissioning ceremony with a nice blue flight deck and another only a few months after on her shakedown cruise with the blue stain on the flight deck almost gone.
Can't answer the kit question but the rudder would have been covered with fabric so it's highly likely to have been replaced a couple of times. Notice how the trim tab is more faded, almost as much as the stabilizer.
My Nephew went out on the U.S.S. Bush on it's shake down cruise and got pictures of the first cat launch and landing. What struck me was being able to see a stream of rust coming down the guard rail of overhang he was standing on. Brand new ship not even on active duty yet and already needing a fresh coat of paint.

I believe the Italeri one is an AM rebox...Hasegawa kits are good but make sure you grab the aftermarket dive flaps. I still have a couple AM kits in the stash.

The B-17 above the gas station I remember very well, when I was quite young my dad would get petrol at that station so I could look at the bomber close up. Once I was even allowed to climb up inside to look around, sadly later on there was so much theft of parts from the interior that the bomber was sealed off and nobody was allowed to enter it.
