25 PDR field gun (Ongoing project)

Rust was a big problem for the 8th in Libya Paddy. Especialy near the coastal areas as there is some salt marshes that they had to cross. The sandstorms cut the paint and the salt coroded it fast. So your rust is acurate for late in africa but not for when they were in Egypt.

Wouldn't/couldn't the amount of rust depend on where the equipment was earlier and/or how/where it was stored?

Cheers

when stationed in Cyprus my brother had a motorcycle he owned out there brought back to the UK and that rusted badly on the ship coming back and was rust free in Cyprus. Salt water on deck is a killer. My guess is that this equip would have had the seeds of rust sown on the journey out to N Africa and once in there even painting will not stop it, especially in poor quality steel !! that is often rusty during manufacture.

Looks fantastic, Paddy- cheers! What a great metal wart that truck is! ;) One thing I've noticed is that the rope on the front looks pretty darned hairy. You might could pint some dilute white glue over ot to glue the fuzz down. Just my two pfenning, mate. :pilot

Cheers Chuk
Yea i noticed that once i took the photos, it doesn't really show life size but i thought i might give it a mat coat spray from a can and smooth it while still wet ..There are a few dry Bubbles in the wash coat that show up in the pictures that do not show in life size so i need to sort them as well.

I think youre right The salt marshes did not help either. If I look at pictures of units stationed near the egyption coast I dont really see much rust.

One thing I can tell you is here in africa - or at least in sub sahara africa rust is a problem for reasons other than salt. We have a huge amount of iron in our enviroment etc. So any metal that is left uncoated will start rusting immidiately because it gets "infected" with loose iron in the enviroment. We even have chemicals to remove iron from our swimming pools here.

When I did my military service I was based next to Sishen and that is an Iron mine. We used to have a can of paint in our vehicles and once a day we would paint over any scratches so that it would not start rusting. Rain was hell on our rifles as the iron ore dust would stick to em and we would have rust forming within hours.

Another little corner of the scene takes shape..
