I would not call this a walk around of a battleship, but thought I would share the photos. The one thing that gets you is how huge these ships are.

Phil, the USS Iowa is bigger. She's docked in Long Beach as a museum ship. I should post my pics of that ship. I was on board her with my Historical Miniatures Gaming Society friends putting on a miniature naval wargame battle on Iowa's fantail. It was such a popular exhibit among the guests that the museum has asked us to make this a quarterly event.

Now to dig through my archives of photos....

Mark is right, SD was large for her time when you consider some of the earlier ones that sank at Pearl Harbor were in the 20,000 ton range. SD Class weighed in at 44,519 t loaded, North Carolina class were only 500 tons heavier but were about 50 feet longer. Then the Iowa class fighting weight was 52,000tons and 200 feet longer than the South Dakota class. By comparison, the Yamato class Japanese BB was 65,000 tons, pretty sure that's the largest ever put out to sea. I think the Germans talked about a larger one.

Well, you could just go to TX and see the USS. Texas . I think it's similar to the Arizona. A lot different from this era .

Would love to be in one of these ships when they fired a broad side. Bet that was a kick in the pants . :woohoo:

I say "big" because these two are the only one's I've been on to look around an actual Navy ship !!
