Touch annoyed

Got a frantic call from the wife to come and take her and our little fella Lynx to the vet. Seems he had a gash on his back end by the tail. Poor little mite. Vet figures an anal gland got infected and burst. Okay stiches, no problem. What annoys me is all the extras they add to the price. Because we went without an appointment even though there were no other patients there and it was very quite we have a emergency fee. By the way they will get to it later today so no rush. Then a cage fee, then ...... Looking at almost $700.00. Oh but they don't think they will need to hydrate him so we are saving some money. What would a person who is running short do? Would they give the cat back and say sorry???

My poor little man is going to be wearing a cone of shame for a bit and while I have no problem paying to keep him in tip top shape I just find the high cost so disappointing.

In SA we now have special medical aids for pets. One medical aid even allows pets onto your scheme as children.

I hear ya James. I know as soon as I step in the Vets door it's going to be $200+ no matter what. :bang head

Yeah that is part of why I have not gotten another fuzzy friend. While I really loved having my Austrialian Shepard, I don't miss the hair everywhere and the final vet bill (s) came to about $3500 when he got sick and died. :blink

A good vet is something to hold onto. We had the best I've ever known about an hour away from us, but he sold his practice and moved to Maine. He was well worth the $300 it cost to open the front door since he really had the animals best interest in mind. On at least a half dozen times in the life of my dog, he consulted over the phone to avoid an unnecessary trip, including wounds and a virus where he unpromptedly called us every day to check on progress. No charge, no money, just service since we were clients.

Since then I've gone through a host of them, all falling short. Either they could care less about the animal (I had one inject my dog with a Lyme vac as I was asking whether it was a good idea. The breeder said no way and articles I read were against it because it caused liver issues. Before I even got the sentence finished, she stuck him and said simply 'too late') or they run a bunch of tests that add up to $500-600 a pop (One ran a $350 blood test because they saw something, telling us it was really bad, only to basically say 'whoops' a week later).

I feel your pain, hope the little guy is on the mend.

Wish we had an old country vet around here. I feel your pain James, just remember that we spoil our pets to make up for those who can't be spoiled. :mpup

Worse is paying for a destructive pet who still doesn't care for you even though you saved him from a kill shelter... 4 years later and I have given up hope on having a buddy, only a boarder.

By the way, he loves my son and wife, it is simply me (I'm guessing for being a man) that he can't warm up to.

Regards,

After all this time? Wow, someone must have really messed with that pup. :mpup :idonno

Yeah Bob's dog reminded me of why I do not prefer to own a dog!

Hey we just recently spent our mortgage twice over getting my fuzzy cat, Tanker, back up to speed. He was both coughing up blood and had some sotomach issues, plus aged cracked teeth, so it too a bit after the teeth were pulled for him to get back to eating proper, but he is now back up to his irritating self. Another little $$$$ factoid in all this is that my cat Tanker, who still has his very sharp claws, is fully diabetic, so we take his blood x2 daily by prikcing his ear and deliver insulin 2x daily via a shot/needle, and no Bob, he does not claw nor bite me, but the monthly on his special food + diabetic meds is more than double the cost of my diabetic meds!

Sigh. . All my pets, the 2 cats and the dog were all pretty good about not causing damage. (except Tiger clawed the furniture until he got declawed) I won't have a biter or one that will not behave. Harley was always real laid back and never was one to chew stuff up or tear things up. Could not have asked for a better buddy. Finding another with a similar disposition would be near impossible so I don't even try.

Oh boy ! You guys make me glad we are not currently having any issues . We are also blessed with a good vet at this time.

Makes me glad I no longer have a parrot . The vets that would even touch a bird back then were expensive but now days regular vets seem to think they're equal to heart surgeons when it comes to fees... :facepalm

Cheers, Christian B)

Truer words were never spoken.

Amazing animals, but a black hole of money and attention. Mine barely tolerated it when my girlfriend moved in. Fought a hard air campaign when we got a Lab, but was not standing for that little human thing we brought home one day. I think I must have paid off the vet's boat with that guy. Plus the heating bills alone, once he was gone (no problem finding a good home) I could pull the thermostat back to a comfortable 62. Of course then it was my wife wife who was squawking, but at least she doesn't buzz my head or chew my pencils when mad.

I thought my vet(s) were expensive but reading these posts it seems they are quite reasonable Most office visits are $60 to $100, the higher figure if immunizations are required and I was recently quoted $200 for a complete blood work up. Dental work is very pricey, close to $1k if more than one tooth is involved. At one time euthanasia was free to regular customers but they now charge for that too. My only complaint is that I don't get a volume discount as with my herd barely a month goes by without a visit for one thing or another.

I don't mind paying as these 2 are like my kids. But it annoys me to pay an emergency fee when the office is open and no one is waiting. I think the fee should be for after hours. Anyways 2 more visits and it looks like $60 odd each time so $640 + $120ish == a cured cat who has us wrapped around his paw.

After all the visits my little guy had more than $1k involved and yes, I too am totally wrapped
