Extremely rare film footage of Manfred Von Richthofen taken in 1917.

Let's try it straight from Youtube

Absolutely fascinating. I don't think I've ever seen this footage.

From the comments,
Much of this film was shot by Antony Fokker himself, a keen photographer who appears in several shots. The British pilot is Lt AF Bird, shot down on September 3rd 1917 in Spwith Pup B17095 of 46 Squadron RFC.

That was Goring at 3:05 and I think that's Ernst Udet standing to the rear of Richthofen during the pilot briefing ( Check that, it's Anthony Fokker) . I think that is one of his brothers also to his left.

That was cool! Thanks for sharing. :pilot :good: :drinks

What were they doing at 3:50. Is that an oil can thingy?

Priming the valves Dave. They didn't have oil pumps on those motors and it relied on centrifugal force to keep the valves lubed. One of the reasons those motors slung oil all over the place.

That is so cool! I have to say I laughed a little that 5 guys basically lifted the airplane up to move it out of the hanger! Ahhhh - a simpler time.

Thanks for sharing!

MP, that really looks like a young Adolf Galland in the very last scene. What do you think?

He would have been very young, Galland was born in 1912 :rotf . Wonder who the uncomfortable looking British pilot was.

They mention him in the comments:

"The British pilot is Lt AF Bird, shot down on September 3rd 1917 in Spwith Pup B17095 of 46 Squadron RFC".

I almost missed it myself. I'd love to know the story behind why he was in this film talking with German personnel.
