Well, it has been a long, and sometimes stressful journey, but yesterday I signed the handler responsibilities at work allowing me to bring my service dog to work today. Being immersed in the service dog world and working with a trainer for Ian's dog and training my dog myself, I've been working with our HR department for a couple of months now helping them with research so they can write the policy. No one in the history of the parish government had ever applied for reasonable access for a service dog before. Naturally there were some reservations and questions, but bringing both dogs to our different meetings allowed my supervisors and Human Resources see how these dogs work and adapt to the environment they are in.

Rommel took station under my desk right off the bat this morning. Eventually he may move to the nice dog bed I have for him! I'll be alternating him and Mac as we progress with Rommel's cross training for Ian. This will give Rommel work in public access and being somewhere for long periods of time.

Right on!! (y) Service dogs are wonderful. Not only as a companion but, as a helper to those with disabilities. There are a few people in my area that have them, I see them at the Dr's office, the store & every now and again at the casino. Just yesterday I was at the casino with my mom for a late lunch & there was a service dog a couple tables over from me. a beautiful german shepherd, I'd say about a year old or so laying at the feet of a young gal, mid 20s. I don't know what the story is but, I have alot of respect for them.
Some guy at another table next to me complained about the dog to the waitress & she didn't know how to explain it to him. About that time, the gal had accidently knocked her purse off the table. The dog retrieved it for her & laid back down. Me being me, I stated there's a perfect example of a well trained service dog. The guy shook his head and shut his mouth.

I thing service dogs are a fine idea! I know 2 airmen from my days in Iraq who eventually got them and they have been a Godsend! I also know a 20something who has a seizure dog... Bowzer is a blessing...

Good for you Kenny!
