Tamiya 1/16 Pz IV J

Awesome (y) (y) (y) One question though, doesnt all that copper interfere with radio signals? Do you ground it in some way?
James

Thanks again guys.

James, you just gave me a great idea. I'll wire the antenna to the last bracket since it'll already be inside the hull. Instant antenna array!

With this one I'll be using an older Futaba AM radio, but for most, it's 2.4 GHz frequency hopping, so I don't think there's an interference issue. B) My StuG is surrounded by big brass plates.

Okay that answers another thought/question. So you can use it as an antenna. Length of antenna lead doesnt materr in this case. Very interesting stuff. :D
James

On the old AM stuff, length of antenna doesn't matter. I still have 2 sets and since they are self centering sticks, I use them for my Tamiyas. The other ones where I'm using more channels, I go with 2.4 Spektrum systems. Those antennas can't be touched, they're specifically tuned and usually about 2 inches long (and good for about a half mile).

With these AMs, I build a brass tube into the hull in the appropriate spot and use brass rod as a removeable antenna. I usually lose a bunch of them in battle that way with the barrel swinging around, but the Schurzen bracket isn't going anywhere.

Thanks Luiz and Tom,

I have plenty of extra mesh, so I will be adding at least one or two of the top screens. I don't have a lot of info on them, I can't see how they were attached in my pics. I would imagine that they would have been hinged in some way. Since my photos are hard to come by, I bet they didn't survive too long.

I don't know a whole lot about them either, maybe this will help.

Thanks Tom, I'll check it out.

Here's some more progress:

Schurzen brackets. One of my references had the forward two brackets following the hull side angle so I went with that, it seemed more interesting. Here's the 8 brackets with detail of the angled ones. All brass and soldered.

Here they are on the hull. I angled the front of the bars down to follow the hull line, just thinking it was German engineering at hand, but once I put the turret in place, I saw the reason, turret depression:

Two other mods were the moving of the switch from under the spare track link hangar (adding other links and metal bars) to the turret bin.

And using magnets on the hull instead on screwing in at the hinges. I also added a pivot at the rear which will make access easier than trying to lay the upper on it's side for battery change. Due to design, the turret doesn't lift off, so the entire upper on these has to be removed.

You sure aren't screwing around with this one. Nice progress and craftsmanship! (y)

When a kit costs what I used to spend on a year's worth of stash building, I have to push the limits on it and make it last. :)

Okay, Schurzen and top panels done. I'm putting down my soldering iron for a looooooong time. :gogo

I picked up tin, thinking I would used magnets in the hull to hold the top panels in place, but when laying them out, I decided it would be a heck of a lot easier to just solder them as a unit with th eside shields. They'd still be removeable if neccessary, just a bigger piece.

Thanks to TomN for the link to a great discussion regarding the top shields as crew walkways and not protective screens.

Here are the shield units:

And without the turret:

I'll push the top screens down and fine tune some damage before I paint, but for now all clearances are good. I'll see where I go with overall damage to tie everything together.

Dear Ausf.

...it looks very impressive...the thomma shields (the late ones...) are superb (y)

:drinks

Man, looks like a tank restoration project :soldier :soldier

Thanks for the kind words guys, I appreciate the comments.

I think I'm over the hump here, not much more heavy lifting, just a straight forward finishing of bits. I need to adjust the muffler position a bit to accomodate the pivot of the upper and unless I get nuts with scratch building the doors for the turret shields, I should be moving towards paint relatively soon.

And yes MP, it feels like a restoration project on this end too. :blink

Just some fantastic detailing,no way could i ever contemplate this type of build.Looks great
