Even though an outdoor setting might not have a very good background for the pictures of the finished model you can at least focus on the model and leave the background out of focus and blurred, sure its not ideal but at least with outdoor light your colors will look much better and natural.
Where I live I often have terrible conditions for taking pictures of models outdoors, the brightness of the light changes quickly and I have a very poor background for picture taking. I can do nothing about the rapidly changing light but the background problem is easily fixed by using a backdrop.
