For anyone who knows....

I've seen F-14's modelled with one open nozzle and one closed nozzle and this looks weird as hell to me. Just read that it has something to do with the starboard engine running one system and the port engine running the hydraulics system and the procedure is to shut down the starboard engine first leaving the starboard nozzle open. The port side nozzle closes when the port engine shuts down.

Is this correct? Is there any instance when the Tomcat is at rest that both nozzles are open or closed?
 
That is the norm for the A models. It's something that is unique to the P&W equipped jets. The later B & D models w/ the GE engines do not do that, as they default to open when hydraulic power is lost during the shutdown procedure.
 
Bingo, remember reading the same thing somewhere about the P&W engines. Though you'd probably get dinged at a show with detail like that.
 
Shutting one engine to conserve fuel & extend range was actually common practice for the little A-37B Dragonfly during VN and in use in South America during the 1980's, but I bet you would indeed get dinged for that at a show
