Proper color for late war Tiger Tank

Hello again all,

I have bought my first armor kit, Dragon's #6406 Tiger I Late Production. Got the kit for $20 on ebay. WOW WOW at the number of parts, should be fun.

I plan on painting it as the 3 color camo scheme. I really like Guenze paints. Do they offer the colors I need for the scheme. I don't mind Tamiya's paints either. Not a big can of Life Color Paints.

What color is use for the brownish base primer?

I am really looking forward to starting this kit. Just got to finish a 109 I am working on.

Thanks.

What theater are you planning? Eastern Front, Western Front, Hungary, France? Lots of good reference books and pix once you home in on where it is being used. (y)

What a loaded question...Jon it's really a moving target based on where it was and who did the painting. I'll defer to others more knowledgeable.

But that's what makes the German Armor fun, no two alike.

I am going to be building it out of box. The scheme I have picked out says.

3./s.SS-Pz.Abt.101, Normandy 1944.

The Dark Yellow is RAL 7028. I dont know if Gunze makes a colour for it. I have used Tamiya Dark Yellow. Vallejo make some paint and have teamed with AK Interactive to make 2 sets for colour modulated cam. A base yellow set and a green/brown set. They can be seen in Iron Mikes post here

BIG 10 ,

It looks like you're gettin honed in on th colors .... It depends on how far you wanna take it. 3rd Kompany 1s.SS.Pz.Abtl Normandy can get very specific .... not only on th Camo pattern , but the colors of the Turret numbers, positioning & Rear Color for the Tact Number on th Stowage bin .

I've dug up some pretty neat reference while researching Michael Wittmann's last Tiger (#007 , Kommand Tiger for 1s.SS.PzAbtl, 3rd. Kompanie)

Lookin forward to seeing th Big Cat come alive !!

James has you pointed in the direction I have been using, I really like the convenience and the confidence the AK paints give me. Their sets have several shades of lighter/darker mixes, so you can vary your colors. It should be pointed out that those are flash pictures, so the JP looks lighter and more stark in them than in real life.

Here's where I got mine.

Having good reference photos are a must, not to mention some good tunes while you're painting. (y)

Yea Ian, that's the scheme I think I would like to try.

I have a color set from gaianotes coming.

I will have to get that set from AK Interactive as well, looks really nice.

I would like to build it with Zimmerit. I have been looking at ATAK sight but un sure which set will work with my 6406 kit?

Well you could buy it at http://www.atakmodel.com.pl/ or try ebay. The estore I used to get it from doesnt seem to carry it any more. Actually the few stores I visit dont seem to have it. Anyone else know a place??

BIG 10 ,

As far as th Turret Numbers go ... They're a bit tricky when you go for the Number color on th back of the Stowage bin .... Each Kompanie had a different Solid color - 3rd. Kompanie used an all White Number for th Rear of Their Stowage Bin

Also ... There was a cut out in the Zimmerit on th front & rear of the 3rd. Kompanie Tigers - Other Kompanies used different ways to display th Divisional symbol .

3rd, Kompanie cut a square out of the Zimmerit, painted th background of it either Black or Dark Green ( depending on Your reference) and placed th Divisional symbol ( crossed keys over th shield) over it .

As Ian showed US .... th Camo pattern differed between the Kompanies as well & Th picture that Ian has displayed pretty much nails 3rd. Kompanies scheme. The Top surfaces pattern was a hard edge similar to this one

Notice th front & rear areas that have th divisional Symbol & th cut out for th ZImm.

Th pattern can differ, but th Hard Edge is easy to accomplish . I used some Blu-Tac & cut it into thin strips & then rolled it, placed after th base coat was painted & cured. Then painted th Red-Brown & Dark Green patches.

Here is the Zimmerit from Atak's site ... not sure if They still have it in stock - http://atakmodel.istore.pl/en/product/view?id=12134706

http://www.discountmodels.com/cavalier_35.shtml - Here is a set from Cavalier ( #Cav 131). You may want to check with these Guys to see if it's in stock. I have not delt with these Guys so I'm not sure about them ..... It's worth a call. ?

Hey what's the reference for the hard edge topside camo? Was that camo unique to 3rd Co? I will be building Wittmanns last ride soon 007) and want to get it right.

Hey AGENTG ,

I got some reference off of Tigers in Focus as to th typical Scheme. As far as Wittmann's last ride ... There's only one picture & it's not very good. So I used th info. that's available on 008 & 009 , and to what th typical schemes looked like for the Kommand Tigers . I think that if You go with patches on th sides & a Hard Edge on th Horizontal Surfaces you'll be correct.

Tigers in Focus - http://www.tiif.de/board.php?boardid=2&sid=a43746d905059e94c0a7b1b90f7ccb4b - It's in German so , you'll have to get a translator ( Google Chrome does it automatically) in Your Web Browser, BUt you can look & see th 501st.s Tigers in Normandy.

HTH.
