On (railroad)tracks campaign

If it is on, or with the railway transport closeby then it's fine with me Roman (y)

I kinda like the idea of a lone caboose sitting on an abandoned spur out in the woods somewheres. :hmmm

I've kinda given some thought to scratchbuilding a modern diesel locomotive in like 1/24 scale. W/ the 3D printing getting accurate rail would be fairly easy, and could probably have the wheel sets printed too if I couldn't figure out how to make them myself.

There are a few that I like the look of.

This is a GE Dash 8-40C

I also like the GP-35

This one might be cool to do, its a DD35, basically 2 GP35's on a single chassis.

I like this type too. This is a GE ES44C

If I were to do it, I'd choose a train from Union Pacific. I remember seeing UP trains when I was growing up in San Diego, so I've had an interest in UP for a long time.

The biggest thing if I were to decide to attempt it would depend greatly on how much reference information I could track down on the different types. I could see a project like this taking quite awhile, so it might never happen.

Adam there is a ton of information out there.

Caboose Hobbies in Denver would be a place to start for books and stuff. They sell just about anything for scratch building. You name it from lights to sounds to spikes they have it or can get it. If you can't tell I spend more time there when I go to Denver to get supplies the the standard LHS. Generally they are very helpful. (sometimes there is a grumpy one) I bet they have or know where you can even get a scale drawing of what you want to build.

For me I'm not sure what I'll do yet. I had an Uncle that retired from Santa Fe, the old railroad that ran here was Rock Island, or I just might do a Ho scale grain car all weathered up.

That would be cool! (y)

I figured if I decide to try to scratchbuild one, I'll post up on the Model Railroader webforum and see if I can get any help there.

Wow...the DD35 would be massive. At first I thought maybe you were thinking of a small switch engine.

I had the idea of scratch building the front end of a Southern Pacific SD40T-2 coming out of a tunnel
in some large scale...even that would be quite a project. Gotta learn Sketchup and get into 3D printing
first though...

If I do build one, I'm going to try going w/ scratchbuilding using styrene & such. Some things such as the rails, possibly the wheels, and a few other things would probably be 3D modeled and then printed but my goal would be to do as much by hand as possible.

Googled Sketchup, Thanks Tom (y)

Just downloaded Sketchup...

For anyone interested, go here:

DO NOT PRESS BLUE "START DOWNLOAD" KEY!!!!

Press green "Free Download" and you'll be fine.

Now to figure out how to use it...
