My First award in somewhere around 45-50 years

Yesterday was the Annual GOMBS (Grumpy Old Model Builders) Model show held at the Forest Lawn Legion in Calgary, this years was kinda special though as it was in honor of Rick Chin, a rather iconic member of the Calgary (and beyond) modeling scene, hobby shop owner, and founder of the club, who, sadly, passed away this year from liver cancer while organizing the event. Fortunately a few of the members got together and kept the ball rolling and so things will continue on in the spirit in which Rick intended for some time to come. To give you an idea of what that is, if you want you can sponsor an award for the "best finger print left on a canopy", and it is up to the sponsor to pick the winner.

Sorry for the poor quality pic, but anyways this is the Rick Chin honorary award, 18 is the number he always used to submit his entries, and has been retired this year, in case you can't tell, he was a Phantom luver, and the writing in the small red part says "Just Build It" which was his favorite catch phrase whenever anyone would start getting a little accuracy anal, along with other iconic phrases such as "who cares nobody gonna know the damn difference" etc. etc. etc. and he built a lot of winning contest models from shows in both Canada and the US. You could say that Rick didn't just own a hobby shop, he had the worlds largest stash :soldier

K enough about Rick, now it's my turn :D , when Rick passed away I was away and not going to be around for a bit, having a couple of kits on display at the shop I got a hold of one of the guys involved in things and asked if he could grab them for me, which he did, an old 1/72 esci Opel truck and a Hobbycraft I-16 which had been there for over 10 years. This was back in June and I never quit got around to collecting them till yesterday

. I let the guy know that I was pretty sure I could make the show so if he wanted to bring them I'd pick them up there, long story short I ended up driving all night and although I was going passed the house stopping in to grab a model or 2 wasn't really a feasible option and I wasn't planning on entering anything anyway so I didn't really think about it. But once I got to the show and collected my models I thought what the hell and put my money down on the I-16.

nothing particularly special and painted according to the now much maligned book on the subject, I put it next to another and what I though better one (which I didn't take a pic of) and went off to take in the view and conversations (beer).

I shoulda took more pics, but between fatigue and beer.........so any way I was yapping with the guy who built the diorama(which won 2 awards) when I caught the "somebody needs to work on their writing .....TIM? Gillssshh?"

So I won the GOMBS 2014 John Eglinski Memorial (Between the Wars Aircraft) Award Sponsored by to Gentlemen from Edmonton.

Thats Rick on the plack by the way

Way to go Tim, it's the unexpected that makes it more special. And yeah :smack you should have gotten more pictures, what you got is amazing. :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy

Congratulations Tim!!! (y) (y) That's awesome. I only met Rick twice but on the second visit to his shop I got a lecture on the "just build it" mind set of his. It was awesome because I happen to agree! haha

Well it seems I missed both the Vancouver IPMS and the GOMBS show yestereday. :smack After two months away from home though I just didn't feel like another 4 or 6 hour drive plus I had to work. I'll have to plan better next year.

Way to go Tim (y) Looks like it was a fun show. Sure wish there was more model shows in my area. Oregon only has one a year that I know of.

Very cool Tim and a cool subject as well (y) (y) (y) Hard to predict what the judges will think.

Any more pictures of the subject ?

I have one of those planned for the near future.

Cheers, Christian B)

Thanks Guys :D not bad, I guess, for a model I built over 10 years ago :dance

Thats the fun part, there are no "Judges" per say, there are award sponsors, and who ever sponsors an award is the judge, if you will. and there is no specific description of what an award is, hence you can sponsor an award for best finger print left on a canopy or best shade of pink on a sherman or what ever tickles your fancy :mpup

Nothing special, just your typical Hobbycraft kit, more of a generic representation rather then a more precise rendition of the subject. Simple yet quit robust and open to a bit of extra if you wish to put forth the effort.

It's funny but the reason it was in the shop is cuase I was goaded into buying it by Rick when I was on building slump buying spree, it was actualy a nice therapeutic build becuase it was a simple who cares what it ends up like sort of thing.

I have always liked this aircraft a lot .....Sort of an early Russian John Deer ruggedness and simplicity about it.
