"Let me see your map, LT!" Vietnam 1967 COMPLETED

"Let me see your map, LT!" Vietnam 1967

Thoughts and prayers to you and your family. The figure is coming along nicely.

Merry Christmas.

"Let me see your map, LT!" Vietnam 1967

Thanks, Guys.

The past two weeks I have been helping my parents with things and during that time my dad was diagnosed with colon cancer that has spread to his liver and in between his lungs. I had brought this figure with me to try to help me relax during the evenings, but did not get much done on him other than his right leg while I was there. Last night, at home, I worked on him some more and this is as far as I have gotten so far. I think he is progressing nicely. I still have a long way to go as the shirt still needs to be completed, equipment painted, arms painted, M16 painted, and weathering applied.

James, I'm sorry to hear of your father's illness. I'm praying for him as he goes through this ordeal. The figure looks great so far, I hope you can finish him this year. Family comes first though. Merry Christmas my friend.

Thanks for all of the thoughts, prayers, and support. We greatly appreciate it. It really helps and does work. My wife went to the oncologist yesterday and learned that she will not have to undergo radiation nor chemo since the surgery was successful in removing the cancer from her breast and that it had been contained so all she has to do is take a pill every day for the next five years. We are relieved about that. I won't know much more about my dad's situation until his oncology appointment on the 23d.

Between all of that and trying to get ready for my new job and looking for a place to live in Oklahoma, I haven't done much on the figure, but did make a little bit of progress.

All I have left to do is finish painting his helmet and the stuff in the helmet band, paint his arms and the M16, paint his boots, then weather the figure. When I put the helmet on his, I was expecting to have a bit of time to wriggle it into position like I normally do, but for some reason the gel superglue took hold right away as soon as I put the helmet on his head. It is a bit off, but I can play it off as being moved a bit from moving through the jungle and wiping sweat from his brow.

I think it looks very natural. Brilliant work James. I'm also glad to see prayers answered. You'll continue to be in mine.

Thanks, Guys.

I got some painting done on the camo cover for the helmet. Although not complete, I have the major leaf shapes painted on and the helmet band painted as well. I still need to paint the torn portion of the cover showing the reverse desert camo pattern, the steel helmet showing through the hole, and the insect repellant, c-rat toilet paper, and c-rat cigarettes. It is a shame that I will be fading out the helmet cover and one won't be able to see the leaves as well as they look now.

One thing I noticed when I posted these photos is that there was a speck of dust on the 9th Infantry Division Patch which I just blew off.

I am going to try to get the rest of the helmet completed before I have to head to Fort Sill tomorrow. I am going to bring him with me so I can work on him in the evenings.

Take care, thanks for looking, and have a great weekend.
Cheers,
James

These pictures are a bit dark, so I will try to take better ones the next time I post, but here is the helmet with the cover faded and torn and items in the helmet band painted. There is a bottle of bug juice, a pack of c-rat toilet paper, and a pack of c-rat Pall Malls.

Wow, sensational work! Just enough of the camo pattern shows through to enable one to see how incredible that pattern is. Way to go James!

It seems like it is taking forever to finish this figure, but I am only getting 15 minutes here, 20 minutes there, and yesterday a couple of hours in which I can paint. So, here he is prior to weathering. I have tried to represent sweat by applying a satin varnish over the skin areas. If you look closely, you can see tiny scratches on his arms from wait-a-minute vines. Next step is to dirty up his uniform, equipment, and boots.

Impressive James! I love the added detail of scratches from the wait-a-minute vines. Brilliant idea!
