Latest Acquisitions Revisited!

Yup, as soon as I got them, haha. Took a bunch of pictures, figured I'd do a quick review on them. They're very nice, I'm very impressed with them.

:woohoo:

Please say you have used them - you know "tested" them. I've wonder about something like these myself.

Yea, that is a very nice feature, it worked great for holding the styrene strip in place last night.

When you have a minute Bob, last night I tried doing the review, but when I clicked the add a review link on the main homepage, I got an error message that it couldn't find the page.

The screw down clamp is nice feature. Really lock your work in place. :popcorn

Nice looking set Adam! I am sure you will get a lot of use from them.

Now that you have them, I might suggest a micro arbor press like the one that Micro Mark carries. Seems like I saw someone saying it is a copy of another company's product, but can't remember where that is now. The Micro Mark one is a bit on the rough/crude side. It works well though. I bought it to use with my old Waldron punch sets and it works much better than the "Whack-a-Mole" method. It presses the punch through instead of the impact.

Had to rework the Micro Mark tool a bit. It isn't that great, has a number of functional issues. It works well enough now, but still isn't as smooth as it should be. Also bought the littld drill/tap accessory for it. Don't waste your money on the accessory!! While the Jacobs chuck is quite nice, the shaft is not the right size for the hole. Way too small!! :bang head

As for how the press works, it does a really nic job. The little punch outs have a nice round top edge and it doesn't feel like it is going to tear up the tool.

Thanks for the suggestion Paul, I'll absolutely look into it. If I remember right, Harbor Freight carries a small arbor press, I'll have to see if that might work.

Unless they have added a tiny one, the ones I remember them having are way too big. The little one I have the press bar is only about 5/16 diameter max. The little gear that drives it is about the same size. A very light twist was all it took to do the punch work.

Latest Acquisitions

That's very possible, I've not looked at them in a long time. The smallest listed on their website is a 1/2 ton.

Yup, that is the press I was thinking of. WAAAAAAY too big. Will destroy you nice new tools. The one at Micro Mark is tiny and very light weight. It is just right for the punches as it isn't heavy and you can "feel" what it is doing.

If it's coming from MicroMark you can rest assured it's a knock off.

Grainger has a .5ton one for less than $100. would that be too heavy?

Latest Acquisitions

Yup that would be too heavy too Bob. The real Sensipress at Northwest Short Line and the Micro Mark Knock off are rated at 250 lbs max and the presses only weight a couple of pounds themselves.

I can attest that the MM one isn't made very well. Kind of sloppy and the rack and pinion do not engage very well. Very rough and not a smooth action. With a fair amount of rework on it I was able to make it Just "OK".

If I had been aware of the fact that MM does rip of type Knocks I wouldn't have bought the one I have I would have gotten this one:
Sensipress

Yeah a bit pricey, but it is real important to have a good smooth action. As it is, I might spring for this eventually anyway.

Ah, NWSL makes some very nice tools, I've got their Chopper II on my bench that I use fairly regularly.

I also found that Panavise has a small arbor press as well but its a lot more than I'd really like to spend ($175.00)

I'll definitely keep an eye out for that Sensipress. Maybe I can find one on sale somewhere or find someone selling on on ebay or a modeling forum.

The USAF flew B-47s out of Chennault Air Force Base. Chennault is about a mile from my office.

Bought myself a few early Christmas presents:

That Badger Krome is so pretty I was tempted to not even use it.

The dollar is very strong against the Yen currently so I went to HLJ and grabbed this for cheaper than anywhere in the states:

I keep hearing about these Flory washes to I grabbed a few to try out for myself:

Saw that Birdcage today at the LHS, he was asking $150 or so. How did you do on it Jeff?

Latest Acquisitions

Yep, would have pulled the trigger on that, $150 at the LHS is too steep for me.

Good find :dude

Wow, Santa has deep pockets ! and an early delivery as well . :woohoo:

Life is good (y) (y) (y)

MP and myself had a stroll through the LHS yesterday if you can consider a three hour drive as local.

Amazing at the price of everything including the dusty books on the shelves :vmad

Good company though and the wives would have been proud of how much we saved . :good:

Cheers, Christian B)
