Last B53 dismantled

Read the news that the last B53 was dismantled recently.

What's a B53? Just a 9megaton Thermonuclear gravity bomb.

It started service in 1962 being loaded on B47, B52 and B58 bombers. It was the original Bunker Buster but was replaced with the more modern B61 bomb.

I was stationed at Grand Forks AFB ND in 1983 and my first official sho' nuff' load job was to download the last alert ready B53 bomb. As far as I know the B53 was never put back on alert at GFAFB and the B61 was the primary weapon of choice from that time on.

Interesting news. Considering that all the engineers who built the things are retired or gone, I bet that was a fun little project... Is Texas still there?
 
John the article actually talked about that problem. guess no one took notes on how to undo what they did.
 
I got to work on the Mk11c reentry vehicle... at Whiteman AFB... We had guys working with us from the old Atlas F days and a couple of Titan pukes...
