Kotare Spitfire

Have not had too much trouble with Humbrol. Just have to get it thinned right, and found that Testors thinner and Xylene work quite well. I also don't shake Humbrol cans or any of the old type bottles. I shake thouroughly Vallejo bottles and have a couple of small Stainless bearings in them to help things along. I also use Vallejo thinners with Vallejo paints and have been having quite good results. Have not tried the Vallejo primers yet, but am getting close so we will see how that goes.
 
In fairness to Humbrol i think its a case of what you usually spray so what you are used to ?
Humbrol is about as far away from something like MRP as you could get but i get great results from MRP, I know you cant thin it and will need 6 coats to get a cover which would blow the mind of a Humbrol sprayer :)... So why spray MRP ? well it has a micro pigment so the finish is like glass which works for some subjects but not others.
 
Got back in the shed today to mask off the canopy. I decided to do a double mask to get interior and exterior frame work. First a black primer, then the interior color on the inside, exterior on the out.

It's not scratched, I promise. I didn't seal it this time because I was using only acrylics and figure it would wash right off if I screwed up.
 
Well I'm in a little trouble. The canopy didn't take the clear coat well, when i stripped it I saw there are in fact some cut lines from masking, really didn't think I cut that deep but there they are. So I used those new sanding sticsk I got which include the glass sanding sticks. Goes all the way up to 7k grit. Then clear coat again, looks like shit.
Would it be blasphemy to put the Malcolm hood on this aircraft?
 
On the road trip this weekend I was able to pick up the last Dark Earth and RAF Dark Middlestone off the Mission Models paint rack at the big Hobby Town in Kennesaw. I tried out the MMP Dark Earth and I can't tell any difference in the color when sprayed on top of the Humbrol. I got he Middlestone because I got at least two Mosquitos in the stash that will need some attention sometime.

Anywho, I cleaned up the demark lines and tried to replicate the camo shapes best I can. The Mobius air brush is nice change, but I think I'm still in the market for another.
Got the Malcolm hood masked up and canopies are in place.

Clear coat up next and I gotta get the underside done.

Well i am always learning. The spitfire at first used std arch type hood but it was found to be to low for tall pilots ( actually not very tall pilots as well ) so in 1938 a bulged top hood was introduced which i thought was the Malcolm hood but that was introduced in 1941 as differs because its bulged at the sides as well. So all those shots of battle o Britain Spits as well as before and after that look like they have a malcolm Hood are actually an intermediate hood , bulged on the top but not on the sides.

this early shot shows both types of pre Malcolm hood , 2 bladed prop so 1938. If you look closely you can see a knock out oval panel on the left side of the first canopy which is a dead giveaway for the bulged top flat sides version..
Some Mk V used the malcolm hood later but it wasnt compatible with the earlier screen ( note the one above is not an armoured screen)

probably a better example of a malcolm hood is the early Mustang and later Corsair hoods. ?

anyway i am getting a bit anoraky now 🤣 but the upshot is your Kotare canopy in your pic above with the oval panel on the side is perfect for your aircraft from 1938 :)
