Kinda neat WW2 item

Was digging around my in my FIL’s stuff, and found this.

WW2 Ammo can. I’m guessing it held ammo for the Garand rifle. Lid hinges open and lifts off as you see in the pics. WHY YELLOW? he said it was painted that way so he wouldn’t forget it!

I recall we had dozens of those around the shops and other places. Where they all got to I don't know, probably the jackasses who stole the scrap metal got them.
