Just Messing Around

Iron Mike

Master At Arms And Resident Curmudgeon
Since the South is in the broiler, I've been fiddling around with some new techniques, all learned here. I have been planning to build this Semovente for awhile and since several of my projects are on temporary hold, I decided to try the hairspray technique on the interior.

I added a little MIG Productions Grease and Oil Stain to trash it a bit, still need to add an oil wash. too bad most of this will be hidden, but trying it out this way took some of the fear out of learning! More later!

Re:Just Messing Around Semovente M40 Progress

Thanks, Ted!

I managed to squeeze in a little bench time, lots of distractions this week! More progress on the Tamiya Semovente M40, pretty much straight from the box.

The kit came with moulded headlights, so I used my handy dandy punch and some scrap clear plastic packaging to make some lenses. The tools are painted with acrylics and oils, still need to do an overall weathering and some dust. Planning to display with the hatches open, MG in place and maybe a tanker or two, just wanted to shoot some pix with the lids down too. What do you think?

Re:Just Messing Around Semovente M40 Progress

Wow Mike it does not look as I remember. I like it a lot. The interior wear and tear looks very convincing to me Too bad it will not be in plain sight.
You were right about the headlight.

Re:Just Messing Around Semovente M40 Progress

I used John Steinman's method, http://tanksandthings.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=288:winter-camouflage-using-the-hair-spray-technique&catid=48:john-steinman&Itemid=68
Works really well, once you get over the "oh crap!" factor! I added the exhaust ports to the Tamiya mufflers, from my reference pix.

Here's a few more pix with the hatch open..

I have the figure in primer, maybe I'll try Painting With Giovanni?

The exterior is great, the variations in color are subtle and well done. The interior is good and from what you'll see from the hatches it's just fine. I hate the quandry you get in on how far you should go with interior details and 'fixes'. Once you get in and committ to an interior I fight a personal battle of the inside should match the outside, but it won't be seen so... how far to go? You've done well.

Re:Just Messing Around, Semovente UPDATE

Thanks, Tim! You are always more than kind!

Slodder, thank you and yes, it is hard to decide how far things inside should be detailed. Seems a shame to go all out, only to cover it all up!

Here are a few of the shots I took after the base and groundwork have been started. Figure is underway as well, but that is always hit or miss (mostly miss) for me.

More as it progresses. Yes, it's on Photobucket!

Re:Just Messing Around, Semovente UPDATE

Mike that looks awesome
I dont know if this will help you , but I have used the hairspary trik several times and had good results . I use suave #8 super hold in the pump bottle , unscrey the lid and pour directly into a paint cup spray over a oxide primer finish let it dry good . Next apply top coat paint color of choice when it is dry chip with whatever style you are comftorable with .If you want to see how it turns out , look at the land wasser schlepper build .
One more thing the hairspray can be cleaned out of the airbrush by shooting window cleaner.

Re:Just Messing Around, Semovente 9-4-2010

Thanks guys! I always appreciate your comments, makes me work harder on new things!

I broke down Thursday and painted figures :blink not really my favorites pastime! I added the aerial, complete with spring and some pigments around the base.

Looking at these pictures, I see I'll need to spray the figure with more flat, he didn't look that glossy under natural light and his hands need some work! I used Joe Hudson's SBS on this figure, I think it's an easier method than what I had been using. The paints are all Vallejo Model Colors, with a light brown oil and Humbrol thinner wash. Comments, suggestions always welcome. :)

Very cool build, Mike! As someone said, I'd like to be able to "mess around" with the same quality you do...

Looking at your almost totally OOB build gives me a little more hope of being capable of a good build with my stuff - maybe I can fool some of folks with a good paint job, eh!

Anywhat, I'm learning a lot here - can't wait to get my hands on my models (they're still on their way here :ermm:)

Cheers and thanks for sharing! :)

Re:Just Messing Around, the updates

Thank you, Fernao! Your kind words are much appreciated!! Being a member here for the last year or so has taught me much about new techniques and support from the group has helped me grow as a modeler. Working with a good kit to start makes out of the box MUCH easier and maintaining the FUN in the hobby is most important! Thank you again, makes me happy! (y)

Hi Mike,

Figure looks good, and I'll be happy if you will join me and paint some other figures.
