IPMS West Central Missouri Modelfest 23 August 2025

image000000(65).jpg
Departing 0710 for points south. Eagleville Missouri is the first planned stop. Big, fresh cinnamon rolls at the ol' Dinner Bell cafe'. Sadly, the station has a new owner, and the cafe' is closed for renovations. No matter! A couple of bear claws later the Saturday car-ride resumes!
The drive to the Liberty Christian Fellowship Church is 160 miles, give or take. It's a fine day for a car-ride with my Sweetie!

"The Ambers" conduct registration. I filled and printed forms for my 8 entries beforehand, so registration went smoothly! The IPMS West Central Missouri raffle table looks well stocked, so Teresa gets the go signal to work her raffle magic! In a moment of confusion, the raffle staff tried to give her 240 tickets for her $40.00. Math, it's tricky sometimes.

An almost full compliment of vendors surround the contest space. Lookee heyer! Good ol' Terry Barrow! His wife, Mary and his kids are here too! And! an unpictured new arrival. Grand daughter Scarlett Rose. Just 2 months old. I called this picture "Proof of Life" and joked and chatted with the Barrows. Terry had a 1/350 ship kit he wanted to sell me. I chose to wait, even though I didn't have an Iron Shipwrights 1/350 USS Bainbridge, DD-1 full hull kit in my collection. Terry bade me to certify the "green" on his Airfix 1/72 B-25C and Tamiya 1/48 M-5 Stuart models. In Roscoe's absence, I agreed.

Mr. T's "Green" paint was certified authentic, even though I consider myself an amateur compared to Ross Petra's Green expertise.

It looked like we might be the only Plastic Surgeons in attendance until Joe and Aimee Lotz showed up. Aimee and Teresa promptly set off for the yarn store together.

Ok. It's been a while since we have been to the Liberty show. Understand these are only my favorite "Eye Catchers" and do not represent the entirety of the contest in any way.

I got my Funny Car fix. I love a funny car dragster. There were a lot of automotive models and many of them were scale works of art!

And now, vehicles and Tanks! (You're Welcome!) I thought the marooned Royal Army Male tank was exceptional! Yep, Terry's M1A2 Abrahams is pictured above as well. I saw the 1/35 StuG-A-Saurus build and thought of Ross, right away.

There were some "flying thingies" too. You don't often see an F4F-3 Wildcat in olive drab green. This Hobbyboss model was a product of a group build, obviously by Mad Men! The FM-2 os the Hobbyboss EZ kit.

The P-47H conversion from the Trumpeter 1/32 Thunderbolt kit was really well executed.

Jerod and Donya Boothe arrive. You can tell by the big Whirlwind model. I ran out of upload space! ZORN!!

More "flying thingies". Jerrod Boothe's RAAF B-737 conversion was really cool! This is the first Junkers JU-290 I've seen built. It looks like the nose doesn't fit well, but there were obvious flaws in the was the kit wings fit.

Feldmarshall Rommel and his 1/35 scale men was really well done. Everything is in this diorama except the sweat!

Some figures and Sci-Fi. The cool 1/350 Kriegsfischkutter and Monster is here too!

1/350 HMS Hood and WMEC-618. Richard Sliwka's excellent DE model. Don Joy's 1/700 USS Wright CVL-29, a 3D printed model (I think?)

You don't see a Sov. Navy Musashi missile battleship in drydock very often. The idea was thought-provoking, even with glaring flaws in the construction of the ship and cranes. Still, a really cool concept!

Good ol' Chris Seare and the affable Tom Potts commence the awards ceremony. We all find a spot and prepare to "harrumph" and applaud. Total contest numbers were 73 Model Miscreants entered 295 models! A very good local show turnout, indeed!
How did I fare at the hands of the West Central Missouri judges?
20250823_153928.jpg 20250823_153936.jpg 20250823_154003.jpg
Pretty well! 3 wards out of 8 entries! 1/700 US Brig Niagara, 1/350 WMEC-618 CGC Active, and a surprise, the 1/48 Sand Land Royal Army Tank placed! I was a little crestfallen that the 1/72 P-67B Moonbat didn't place. A finished Anigrand resin kit is not commonplace, so the difficulty of the kit assembly is kinda unknown. In the old days, kit difficulty figured into a judges score.

Teresa's Raffle Mojo held steady and she won a few raffle prizes. :yipee: There was only one started "Raffle Turd" in the bunch. The Hasegawa 1/72 G8N1 Rita kit. Raffle prize quality at the IPMS West Central Missouri show is MUCH superior to the other KC contest.
2 Matchbox 1/72 Stranraer kits!? Saints preserve us! See anything you like? Sing out, before I get them listed on tlarmodels.com
You remember what happened to a previous "Raffle Turd", right? Hmm........

At the end of the show, I succumbed. I offered Mary Barrow a Fin for the resin Bainbridge kit. She accepted.
Those Iron Shipwrights guys know their business! This is a beautiful casting! I Found the kit instructions without much fuss.
Scalemates to the rescue again!

We shared quite the raucous lunch with the Booths at Red Robin. Jerrod and Donya Booth are hilarious good fun and it was Donya's Birthday to boot! Jerrod grew up in Fremantle. We did some old Monty Python, farted around, sang a most horrible Habby Burseday and joked about almost everything. It was a pleasure to get to know these model friends better. We managed to eat a damn fine lunch along the way! Thanks for inviting us!

Tradition holds that on the return leg from Liberty, if you see an Amish wagon you MUST stop to buy baked goods! A dapper Grampa sold us a Blackberry cobbler, rhubarb bread and 2 "Fry Pies", One apple and one peach. The fry pies were incredible! I had the peach one for breakfast today.

We looked for cheaper gas and smokie treats on the RTB trip too. Missouri taxes make the price of smokes about a dollar a carton less than here at home. Gas was a little cheaper, so good deal!

Thanks to IPMS West Central Missouri for putting on a well run, fun contest! It was a pleasure to visit this show after a 5 year hiatus.
"Thanks for having us over! We had SUCH a fine time!"

Sounds like you had a fabulous time! Does Teresa ever do the Mega Lotto's. I would suspect she has more of a chance at that than the rest of us poor shlubs put together.
As of now I am starting to plan on being at the Nationals in Ft Wayne IN next year. Should be doable for me with a year to plan.

Thanks for the field report Chris, really great builds. Looks like it was a good turn out.
@MrT Congrats Gramp!
Sure nuff, Teresa needs to start buying lottery tickets. :rotf

The AMT C1500 Sportside and 1/72 Hasegawa Rita kits are sold.
I listed the big Space Shuttle kit last night, with no good box ready to pack and ship her in.
