I want to pass an idea see what you all think

I was daydreaming about a figure I'm getting and what kind of setting to place him in when I got an idea. After the initial shock I quickly recovered and thought I'd pass it by everyone for comments.
As we live in different parts of the world, some of which some of us will never see in person I thought wouldn't it be cool if we took some pics of our local. Not just city shots and common touristy stuff but the real world. In Cold Lake area we have a lot of muskeg and arboreal forest. From my time in Germany I remember the groomed forest around where I lived and the blown bunkers etc. Maybe someone lives in Greece and can take pics around Thermopylae etc. It would make a great resource for our members who are building settings or dioramas outside of town. Even the different beaches, in Normandy, Anzio, Guam, et al. Each beach is not just sand but distinct. The Steppes, Outback, mountains, even the current war zones are all places that we may model without really knowing what they look like. Can you imagine the possibilities? What do you guys and gals think? Worth a try?

Hi James, cool idea! I like seeing where everyone is from, my problem is that Canberra looks like every other sewage treatment work (sorry capital city) and the only battles we have here is the pollies fighting for more dollars! :gogo

A good excuse to walk around with my camera. Cause you just haven`t lived till you seen Winnipeg! Yeah well I still like the idea. If the rain holds off I might try and snap a few pics of the prairies. Actually the storms might make for good pics.

Thanks for the inspiration. I hope as many members as possible share a few with us.

Matt :)

Hey James, a really good idea! unfortunately I will have to be a spectator of others, as there is nothing here in Melbourne that woul really pass muster, be it building or countryside...

Well we won't know unless you snap some pics Brad. I think even some simple local pics would be interesting. Just a chance to see where different people spend their time.

I think we need to be the judge of that. Now get that camera out and take some pictures!

James I think it's a great idea. I'll take some pictures this weekend (oh it's so far away!) and post them.

I don't really need another excuse to get out and take pictures, but this idea certainly helps. This should be fun and interesting.

I probably look at the city, and indeed the country, through very different eyes to you, buddy :) I think this city has so much to see.

[hide]Here are a few shots I took at last year's Open House Melbourne (I hope you all can open this link): Open House Melbourne 2009[/hide]

Went on a mini road trip today with my camera. Don`t get too excited as southern Manitoba is mostly prairie with just a couple of rivers mixed in. Farm fields every where you look. That`s why I drove north along the Red River to prove it isn`t all flat and dull.

But before I exit the city I have to share a couple pics from Assiniboine Park. A huge patch of green in the middle of Winnipeg. And now since moving, it`s only a few minutes drive form me.

Here is CNR 6043. The last steam engine to be used in main line service in all of Canada. This city would still be a little town if not for the railway.

Complete with its own emoticon

Drove about 18km north to a little place called Lockport. Found a little restaurant called the Half Moon. I hadnt been here in at least 15 years.

Behind was quite a view of the Red River and the giant bridge over it. The bridge is also a dam and a lock for ships.

Another common sight is old farm hoses nestled in the bush.

Remnants of one from the early 1800s.

You get used to seeing a lot of sky on the prairies. I could easily imagine a Panther or Sherman lurking behind the trees.

No golden wheat. Not yet.

You can see the weather coming hours before it hits. I predict rain.

Sky, grass, train tracks. Home sweet home.

Yeah I know that was a lot of pics. Sorry  But its tough to narrow it down from 200!

So thats a taste of where I hale from. Now lets see what you guys and gals have to offer.

Can't get him to finish the P47 but he's all over these pictures. I did get to see them before I got to work and behind the content filternazis blocking photobucket. Really great pictures Matt.

Looks a lot like North Dakota when I was there, being able to see the rain bands for miles away, sometimes seeing two or three thunderstorms.

I'm going to try and create a subform off the members lounge for this topic. I like the idea and want to see this. I'm even mapping out a road trip this Saturday to take some pictures.

OK, I setup a new child forum off Members' Lounge, any new pictures should be posted there. Matt try and start a new topic there and post your pictures. I need to make sure you as a user can access the forum.

Sure thing MP. And yeah...photography is little hobby I like. Don't really know what I'm doing, but I enjoy it.

Matt :)

Cool. I didnt think this would be as popular as it seems. I better get the camera dusted off.
