How are they holding up?

By the way, I had no idea what to use it for. My wife brought it home to be able to take care of her private patients. Now, to sneak some out of her bottle (pour into my own spray bottle).

Thanks Alex!

OK Dr, give it to me straight....I can take it.

I notice that the enamal surfaces don't have this, the black and blue stripes, the silver on the wings, which is a different color than the elevator. I try and dust it and the finish comes off. It also seems to have gotten on the canopy and windscreen.

Well, my dear Bob, you have been infected.

This is a typical (inasmuch I can tell from the picture) colony of a "staining" mold, also called a mycellium, which is probably seen only in the silver part either because the enamel was toxic to them or because you cannot see the contrast. These fungii grow in organic matter, most likely the last coat you used contained some form of cellulose or other sugar. Dusting it will only remove the paint, as it adheres to the coating (and decomposes it). Also it is possible that some rests of organic matter (even saliva may account for it) were also present in the canopy and windscreen...

My suggestion is to kill the fungii with these desinfectants and then try to scrub them off very gently with a soaked Q-tip. Otherwise, you may have to paint it over.

The name of the chemical compound is: didecyl-dimethyl-ammoniumchloride (0,05g) in Ethanol (42g).

Glad I could be of help Saúl! :dude

Cheers

Alex

That will do, althoug it is a bit radical... Cleaning up should work.

Just be careful in the future with the last coat of varnish etc. in regards to organic material. If you don't clean them up regularly, they come back.

Cheers

Alex

Well, here's a strange though , since I have never really had any thoughts on this or know it was even a problem .

Mouth wash is said to kill bacteria .... Could that possibly be an easy answer ?

Cheers, Christian B)

My older kits have held up fairly well over the past 11-12 yrs. Having mostly been stored on open shelves! But, since I moved in at mom's, I've taken over a couple shelves in the display case  I went running around the other day & came back & noticed she moved everything around in the display cases!! :eek:hmy: :frantic I aint looked over the models yet to see if anything got broke... :S Afraid to look...
