Good luck Paul. Why would they do this in 3 sections?

Here's a maybe from me.

The IL-2 had many different configuration during it's service life .

From wooden wings to metal wings to cranked wings ( as opposed to straight )

The fuselage also went through wooden and metal . It's complicated, once you study this bird.

Maybe they are hopping to produce other versions...

I agree with Christian. You can see that in the 1/72 Academy models. Since they are producing different Versions, they leave a certain "flexibility" by arranging it in 3 Sections. Tamiya has also done that, although no single-seater yet.
