Has anyone ever taken a ride in a WWII plane?

At the end of the month, there's an airshow at the local airport (Stewart).

Part of the attractions is a B-25 that is offering rides. It's a donation of $425 to the upkeep of the plane.

I normally wouldn't even consider this, but I've been skunked out of a vacation for the past 5 years or so for one reason or another (mostly a bad back keeps me from long car rides) and won't be going on one this year either.

My dream flight would be in a SBD, but a '25 wouldn't be bad.

$425 could buy a lot of styrene, but if it's a once in a lifetime sort of thing...

I'm pretty sure some of you guys have done a flight like that before, was it worth it?
 
I have not, and regret every chance I passed up. Do it! I've flown in a Piper Cub and it was a trip looking down and seeing traffic moving faster than us, but a ride in a war bird? I don't think I'm going to pass up the next chance. :pilot

I had a couple of flights in "Pinnochio", a Dakota converted for CF104 NASARR training. She entered the RCAF 21 Oct 1944 and retired in 1989.

Many years ago, got a chance to poke around the CWH Museum Lancaster when it was here for 419 Sqdn's colour parade. Also toured the B-17 "Sentimental Journey" and the CASA 2.111 (since written off in a crash) when they were in Edmonton. Not alot of room in them for someone in the 6'5" range.

There is a locol Huye helicopter that flew in Vietnam and was restored to its Vietnam colors that does charters and I soooooo would love to go on a flight with it with my son (yeah yeah my daughters too)

DO it mate its an experience that you will have for the rest of your life :love

I've been in small planes plenty of times, my best friend in middle school's dad owned a Piper, so we were always finding our way into it, landing on grass fields, etc.

Being in a B25 would be nuts though, I'm sure I'd be grabbing my money's worth in walk around photos, not to mention the flight. I guess it's deducctible too since it's considered a non-profit donation.
 
Back when I was 9 or 10 my first plane flight was on a DC-3 Business plane. I remember at the time being slightly dissappointed that it wasn't one of the big jets, but enjoyed it immensely anyway. My younger brother and I spent most of the flight with our knees on the couch looking out the windows.

Today, I am so very glad it was a DC-3. How many folks can say they have been on one let alone had a 5 hour flight. I sometimes wonder if it was an older C-47 that was converted. Doesn't really matter, but nice to think about.

I wouldn't trade that experience for anything! If I had an opportunity to take even a small flight on a real warbird (and had the money) no brainer DONE DEAL! :good:
 
Do Piper Cubs count? Beware- when the pilot immediately in front of yanks the stick back to take off, the co-pilot sticks slams you in the goods. HELLO! :blink

Best flight experience of my life (aside from the Bell 212 I fly in for work occasionally).

i was actually surprised when in the front pit. You sit so low you can barely see out the front!!
 
Let's see... limited to WWII only?
PT-17, TF-51 Mustang, B-25 (Panchito), Storch (not sure if the example was Morane SAULnier ;) built), a several C-47/DC-3 variantsd. I couldn't tell what they were as it didn't matter at the time while I moved around South America.

Do it, you'll love it. Just make sure you have a view outside (ask for the gunner's seats and make the Pew Pew sounds).

Modern is a bit more exciting if they include aerobatics.

Stewart is local to me too but I will be in Barbados during that time (20th Anniversary).

I have not. A couple of times that I had the money and the chance I would make the excuse that the money would be better spent elsewhere. I regret it. Not sure now when the next chance will come again.

When my dad died in 2003 I received a small sum of money from insurance...I could've paid some bills off, but I didn't think that was a great way to remember him...so I paid for one of those 30 minute flights in a AT-6 Texan that comes here almost every year. I've never regretted that decision...and even though it's wasn't a P-51, the Gs we were pulling were quite enough...I can still feel the effects of doing a barrel roll ;)
 
Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum offers members rides for a price in a number of WW2 aircraft. Here's some of them scheduled for Agust, 29, 2015.
