I will be doing another figure in late June or July for this build campaign. When I do start the figure, I will take step by step pictures of my face painting technique along with what colors I use.

Thanks for the additional positive comments. I am glad y'all are liking this figure project so far.
Last night and today I have been working on painting the base. I decided to go with the after affects of either artillery prep or napalming of the area. I added a piece of burnt large tree branch. Note the ashy look of the ground, but how not all of it was burnt black. You can see a bit of the dirt under the burnt vegetation towards the rear area of the base near where the figure will be mounted.

Here it is with the figure in place. The figure still needs to be completed, but this gives you an idea how the colors of the figure will somewhat contrast with the groundwork and tree to make it pop out more. I will be adding some ash color to the figure's right knee when I finish painting him. The lighting I was taking the photos with kind of washes out the colors of the figure. When I take the final pictures I will try to have a backdrop and better lighting.

The base seemed to be lacking something, so I added some pieces of roots to simulate partially burnt smaller branches. I am going to complete painting the figure before adding any more vegetation, shell casings, or anything else.
That's the update for now. Back to the workbench!

Here is the figure with the rucksack bag attached to the lightweight rucksack frame. The aluminum frame is scratched up due to lots of use (this is a sign that this Soldier has been around a while). I will need to weather the uniform and equipment again, but will do that after the figure is attached to the base. Note the scuffed up jungle boots. This Soldier is not going to be totally dirty because the setting of this vignette is shortly after insertion into the area of operations.
Here is the beginnings of the helmet being painted. I used to paint helmets attached to the figure but I think I will use this method from now on. I took a toothpick and cut the point off. Then I used gel super glue to attach the helmet to the toothpick. Once completed I will pull the helmet off the toothpick and attach it to the head of the figure. At this point I am blocking in the stuff being held in the helmet camo band.
Here is the helmet cover with the first color of green leaves applied as well as the colors for a pack of Winston cigarettes and a pack of matches.
The lighting kind of washes out the colors of the packet of c-ration toilet paper, but that is what is next to the bottle of insect repellent.

Yeah, I guess so.
I am sure the few times I had to throw grenades in combat I had a pretty intense face, too.

I finished painting the Mitchell Camo Pattern on the helmet cover. I think it turned out fairly well. Here are some photos of it.
The material that the helmet covers were made out of faded after being exposed to the sun, rain, mud, and dust over time to the point one could no longer see a definite camo pattern. I dry brushed khaki over the cover and then used pigments to give the cover a worn look. The part that sucks is that all that work doing the camo pattern can barely be seen, but I have done this many times for the sake of realism.
Now to place the helmet on the figure...

Now I need to open the ejection port cover on a Trumpeter M16 and add a new one since it would be open after having fired a few rounds before engaging with the grenade.

Paying attention to the details is what counts. I'm glad you placed a helmet on your figure. Most excellent work. Back then nobody shaved their heads. I wish I had the head of hair now that I had back then.ldguy Gary S.

Thanks. I was always planning on having him wear a helmet. I didn't sculpt in any hair because the helmet covered pretty much the entire area and would have made for a pretty tight fit when I put the helmet on. I know what you mean about wishing we had the hair we had back in our younger years. For me it is thinning out on my head and seems to be growing in places where I wouldn't have had it before.
Hopefully I will be able to get this vignette completed in the next day or two.
