Hi everybody.

I have been thinking about a thread like this for a while now, and so here it is.

Let me start it by making a clear statement. This is NOT intended to be a thread to comment on ex-wives or inlaws etc :pinch: .

But instead it is a thread to point out little known and interesting facts :hmmm .

Such as.

Did you know that on a modern U.S. aircraft carrier that the anchor chain is connected to the anchor on one end, but is connected to nothing on the other end?

Did you know that slang name for a Prison Officer is "Screw" and this comes from the 19th Century when it was believed that pointless physical excercise was thought to re-abilitate criminals who walked in a giant Hamster wheel had the "screw" tightend at regular intervals to make the task harder  (well you didnt say it had to be interesting  )

Did you know?...It is impossible to lick your elbow. (unless you are Gene Simmons) :woohoo:

You didn't say they had to be informative...haha

Did you know that the highest point above sea level in Holland is 323 meters and that's why we Dutch call that a mountain?

And when you land at Amsterdam airport you land 4.5 meters below sea level?

Did you know that during the English Civil war (1642-1649) between the Royalists and the Parlimentarians , The Royalists lifted a huge siege mortar onto the ramparts of Saint Marys Church wall in Colchester .

standard.jpg

During the siege of Colchester A Parliamentary shot hit the wall below the siege mortar , when the mighty mortar went to return fire the recoil sent the weapon crashing to the ground.

The weapon with its portly look was nicknamed "Humpty Dumpty" , and "all the kings horses and all the kings men could not put Humpty together again" . The besieged city of Colchester fell shortly afterwards to the Parliamentarians . The weapon lived on in a nursery rhyme for children ever after :)

Did you know Slim Pickens (Major Kong in Dr. Strangelove) was a Rodeo Star before getting into movies? And Peter Sellers was suppose to play the role of Major Kong but an injury kept him from playing the role.

Did you know............

Betelgeuse is a red supergiant, and one of the largest and most luminous stars known. If the star were at the center of our solar system (where our sun is)its surface might extend out to between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, wholly engulfing Mercury, Venus, the Earth and Mars. BIG HEY!

Speaking of beetle juice  .

Did you know that the red in most lipsticks (and most other makeup products that are red or pink for that matter) comes from squishing beetles up into a pulp to get a specific chemical (caramine or cochineal)to use as a dye?

Think about that the next time you are kissin on your little sweetie, or vice versa  :pinch:

Did you know that during Napoleons attack on Russia it was that cold with the perma frost on the ground that the cannonballs which were placed on brass racks so they could be stacked into pyramids would start to freeze . Because the rack was brass it would contract but the solid iron cannonballs of course would not contract , this would cause the cannon ball pyramids to fall over . The brass rack was called a monkey and when it is that cold it would freeze the balls off a brass monkey , then you better believe it is cold !

This one I knew about. Brass Monkey became extinct in Cold Lake years ago. Cannon Balls are another story though.

That as absolutley astoundingly large as the super red giant star Betelguese is, that there is something even bigger? It is in a class refered to as a hyper giant. And the largest that they know of so far is VY Canis Majoris. And it could hold over 8 stars the size of Betelguese inside of it, with lots and lots left over :eek:hmy: .

This is something just to try to think about in reference to this.

Our entire solar system could easily fit inside this beast :S

Did you know that the origin of the modern salute dates back to the Norman wars where knights would wear full face helmets .

bascinet_1d.jpg

Assassins were known to infiltrate the ranks and under cover of such helmets were able to infiltrate to close quaters with the enemy generals where they would attempt to kill the enemy officer .

A rule was made that all soldiers would lift their visor to identify themselves in the presence of an officer . The helmet may have changed but the exact same gesture is still used .

Did you know the origin of the two fingered bird or "up yours" signal dates back to the battle of Agincourt ?

two-finger-salute.jpg

The french commander Jean Le Fevre said he would , after beating the english at Agincourt cut off the arrow fingers of every english longbowman he captured after defeating the english. The French lost the battle and every English archer gave the gesture before opening fire on the french in battle.

The signal is still used to voice ones dissaproval in an "up yours" gesture .

Did you know that every polar bears skin is black? But the fur is opaque (at least that is what someone smarter than me said ;) ) and looks white because of all the snow and ice, the black skin helps to collect and hold heat.

Thanks miss smarteerer than me Jenny

The typewriter was invented by a Hungarian immigrant Qwert Yuiop, who left his own special 'signature' on his creation... :pinch:

Did you know that a butterfly tastes with it's feet?

I'm glad I don't have to do that, or everything would taste really really bad :pinch:
