Hi

My first airplane start in awhile, it is an old Airfix kit and due to budget constraints together with curiosity I am planning to build it as an RCAF aircraft straight out of the box.

Way cool James. Will watch with interest. BTW you should show off your JS 152s (thats what they were wasnt it?) Guys and girls this fella is nuts with his small scale stuff. Always a treat to look at.

Hi James

They were ISU-152's (1/100 scale Flames of War) , I tried taking photo's tonight but I wasn't happy with the way the photo's turned out.

James :)

Well so far so good, the wings went together well and so far it looks like minimal putty for the fuselage. There is no interior detail. The black is Tamiya flat black and the silver is me testing the seems for sanding.

Does anyone know what colour De Havilland (Canada) used as a primer paint?

Below is a photo from Airliners.net and shows a Chipmunk with the RCAF canopy and older style landing gear flaring's. I would like to use the RCAF canopy and use the Airfix RCAF decals, does anyone have a photo or link of an Chipmunk in 1970's RCAF colour with bubble canopy similar to the photo below.

The pic you have is closer to the post 1955 AB+3 era scheme when the switch from natural metal to overall yellow occurred. Post unification saw the addition of fluorescent orange markings to nose, wingtips and tail. IIRC, the faired landing gear was one of the subtle differences found on British built Chipmunks.

CanMilAir has 6 decal sets for Chipmunks from 1946 thru 1971, DHC-1 Chipmunk.

Cheers,
Rich

Hi Rich

Very cool website, I just finished going through it, and their decal selection has given me a lot more ideas for the kits in the basement.

Thanks for your help

James :)

Hi

It has been awhile since I posted anything as I have been tired and very busy at work.
Over the last couple of weeks I did manage to get some more work done.

I believe that there is only two coats of yellow on and it will likely need two more coats of yellow to get it where I am happy.

Canopy on and tomorrow depending on things go at least one more coat of yellow. :)

Thanks Sherman

I used a light grey primer and was a little surprised at Tamiya's lemon yellow, the first coat hardly covered over the primer. James Knaus suggested using flat yellow with a gloss overcoat.
