Ardennes Tank Riders...Finished 04/04/14

Re: 1/16 Ardennes Tank Riders...Update 07/21/12

Time for an update.

The Fire Extiguisher

I can't believe how many times I built and rebuilt this thing.

I started off thinking I could use the Tamiya part and detail it up a bit. But after noticing it's
not even round I decided to scratch build one.

I cut a piece of 0.312" dia Evergreen tube.

MA09_15_12-04.jpg

Then added some 0.063" sheet and cut and filed to shape.

A small disk with a rim added from strip stock. Starting on the bracket that holds it.

MA09_15_12-09.jpg

Here's how I made parts of the straps, small bits of strip glued together, let dry, then
trim to size.

MA09_15_12-10.jpg

I decided the tank needed a weld at the top. I wrapped Tamiya tape around it as a guide for filing
a groove.

MA09_15_12-11.jpg

With groove added. You will see the weld in later pics. This also shows better the shape of the tank.

MA09_15_12-12.jpg

Here's how I made the handles. Drilled two holes in some strip, then cut and file to shape.
I made so many of these, I'm not even sure if these are the ones I ended up using.

MA09_15_12-13.jpg

And attached to the tank. With a few other bits added.

MA09_15_12-14.jpg

Here is I guess what is the "On/Off" switch. I meant to take in progress pics of this, but basically
a piece of sheet with two holes punched in it, and two small strips glued to it. Let dry real good and
cut/file/sand away what's not a switch.

MA09_15_12-16.jpg

These will be part of the strap buckle thingy. I'm learning that when making really small parts
that it's easier to start big when gluing, then cut off whats not needed.

MA09_15_12-18.jpg

Adding the straps...talk about tedious.

MA09_15_12-20.jpg

Here is the finished fire extinguisher, I guess I got on a roll and quit taking pics.

Fantastic bit of scratching. Man I'll bet if you could cast that you could sell a few. Most impressive.

Thanks James!

The thought crossed my mind. But I can't say it is 100% accurate, looks the part to me though. :D

That Tamiya doesn't give you a nice kit part is unsatisfactory.
THIS is MUCH better for sure!Well done,Tom! (y)

Greetings,Ron.

Re: 1/16 Ardennes Tank Riders...Update 09/15/12

Thank you for the kind comments guys!

Yeah Ron, some of the Tamiya parts are surprisingly...um, not good. Wait til you see
the spare tracks hanging from the turret.

Re: 1/16 Ardennes Tank Riders...Update 09/15/12

Thanks Jerry, the biz is what I'm after. Debating whether I can get away with just one
strap, most others I've seen have two... :hmmm

WOW... I guess I need to hit the brakes and slow down in here, seems like I missed this
turn and hit the wrong button.

Nice work Tom, very nice work.

I think we've all hit the Thank You button on stuff, can't undo it but hey, it's the thought that counts. :drinks

Update Pt. I - Boring Stuff

I figured I had better blank off the back side of this thing and work out some sort of way
to mount it before I got too far along...

0.040 sheet added to hull:

The same added to turret:

MA11_28_12-002.jpg

It would have been near impossible for this to be in one piece, as my cuts are not perfectly square and
aligned, so the turret sticks out a bit...but I think it kinda looks cool that way:

MA11_28_12-003.jpg

I built a stand out of styrene sheet and tube:

MA11_28_12-101.jpg

And corresponding tubes underneath the hull:

MA11_28_12-102.jpg

This will hold it for working on the bench, will probably do some sort of brass tube inserted into a
wood base for final display...but that's later.

Update Pt. II - More Interesting Stuff

Needed to add some lift lugs around the engine fans:

MA11_28_12-004.jpg

MA11_28_12-005.jpg

At first I figured they were simply spaced 90 deg. around the fan, but no, they are at all kinds of
weird angles. This also shows some work done to make the engine cove appear to be a separate peice:

MA11_28_12-006.jpg

Finally glued on the hull rear plate:

MA11_28_12-007.jpg

Needed to cut the exhaust covers to the proper angle...note the high-tec marking device:

MA11_28_12-008.jpg

Here I'm adding the blocks that mount the fenders:

MA11_28_12-009.jpg

I made a jig for drilling out the tow cable/cleaning rod brackets. Drill hole, insert spacer,
drill hole and so on...worked pretty good, and I made extras just in case:

MA11_28_12-010.jpg

All the brackets drilled:

MA11_28_12-011.jpg

One bracket completed:

MA11_28_12-012.jpg

And the full set:

MA11_28_12-013.jpg

Brackets glued in place and welds added:

MA11_28_12-014.jpg

A little close-up:

MA11_28_12-015.jpg

Welds added to rear plate:

MA11_28_12-016.jpg

Here's a mock up, with some parts just sitting there, not glued yet. I think I'm about ready
to start adding some PE to the hull...I haven't really done much work to the turret yet.

Thanks for looking, all comments, critiques welcome!!
