Airshow weekend

Well its airshow weekend in Cold Lake so lots of noise happening. I've found I'm less interested in airshows as I get older though so will sit this one out. Did see some F-22s on the flight line and a Galaxy and AWACs have come in. Also saw an SA-6 replica and LAV6 sitting on the flightline. Hoping I might get some modeling this weekend if possible.

I used to McGuire AFB back in the 80's, got to see the Angels Thunderbirds, and that Italian Team, was a lot of fun, wish there were some near me.But yes that tarmac was hot,and traffic getting out was horrendous.
Back in 2019 I did see the old Confederate AF at Johnson City, they bought Fifi and a B-24.

We had a crash here in 2015 at my local airfield airshow below.
There are very few local shows as a result now because public liability insurance cost make them impossible. Its a great shame as i used to love the photography aspect of these shows.
Times have changed now. I used to go to the Biggin Hill show and the RAF would send fast jets, i remember seeing harriers, sea harriers ,tornado's F3 and GR3, buccaneers, Jaguars, Phantoms etc all at one show.
Now the RAF only has 2 fast jets so its either an F35 or a typhoon and usually only one or the other.

interesting the cockpit canopy is open, the pilot didnt eject but he was thrown in his seat out of the aircraft on impact and walked away. !3

people in cars didnt.

Sorry this is a bit depressing :)

Whoa! That's amazing. You'd think a fireball like that ....

I haven't been to one in a long while. There is a small showing at our local airport every year but it's not a "Air Show". Last year they had a fly in breakfast and this guy showed up.

It was absolutely gorgeous, the interior looked like a luxury lounge. I looked up the tail number and found there's only a few stagerwing beachcraft around. Very rare.
Collings Foundation B25 showed up.

The last real airshow I went to was a Beauford Marine Corp Airstation when Capt Kevin Davis was killed. Man that was 2007!

I'm with you James, kinda gotten too old to be standing on the hot tarmac putting up with people.

Yeah thats the problem with airshows now. Waiting in line in security while everything you carry is checked for bombs, walking a hot flightline and mostly People. Too many of them. Its hard for me to climb up the ladders to look in a cockpit now also. Then the cost of going. I used to collect coins and patches but now they'll as $20 or $30 each so pass on that. Still it was fun watching stuff come in. One thing they seldom do here is get the old birds in. This year just a P-51.Its been a scorcher all week and so I think it will be even hotter out there today and tomorrow. The lightning show last night though was awe inspiring. The sky was lighting up almost as if it was day time at 0400 this morning. Way cool.

Yeah insurance is insane and has been for a while. We had a crash in 2018. A Trojan T-28 augered in in front of the crowd. You can google it if you want film or pics, but the pilot never survived. Before that in 2010 we had our airshow CF-18 crash at the Lethbridge airshow. Its a dangerous business.

I was at RAF Mildenhall when a G.91 of the Italian Tricolor went in, about 100 yards behind my house. The pilot stayed with the plane to keep it from crashing into a school yard and the local village.

When I was in Germany I missed an airshow at Ramstein because I didnt hear about it until the morning of. Lucked out I guess because 3 Frecce Tricolori mid aired and thundered in in front of the croud. Two weeks before they had done an airshow in Baden Baden and the ceiling was 1000 feet. Everyone did a modified airshow, just basically a fly past. except them. They did the full show. Always thought they were dangerous.

It's sad, but there just isn't enough variety at modern airshows to make it interesting for me. And as having been a working pilot for many years and a flight instructor, I have stayed away from a lot of air shows because I saw too many pilots doing things that I thought were way less than one step away from an accident and didn't look to me like they were up to the challenge. There just aren't that many of the Hoover caliber. And being an old fart, I have memories of some really good airshows, like one at Mather Air Force Base in the late 50's when they were celebrating the arrival of the B-52 there. I can see right now a long row of people sitting on the wing of a B-36. Looked like ants. And during Viet Nam, as sad as that whole affair was, everyday there was a cornucopia of all the Century Series jets flying around, as I was not that far from McClellan Air Force Base, a major maintenance hub.

I was talking about Bob Hoover to someone the other day. Don't remember what year it was but I saw him running "Ole Yeller" through it's paces when it was in it's Rockwell scheme and saw the Shrike Commander show. What's neat is we went to see the air show in an Aero Commander, the guy who owned it let me right copilot back home, held the yoke and felt the back pressure and all. He showed me how to keep the horizon level.

I flew a 500B Commander for awhile, it was a nice handling airplane. Hoover flew a 500U which was almost the same airplane, just a pointier nose.

I like going because I loooove Aviation Photography. I cant afford high dollar camera equipment so I just rent it for the time being. I don't like the security as well but that's the world we live in now. Big lens camera equipment is heavy and they expect you not to carry a bag, please. I am not much for acrobatic planes, 2 is enough in my opinion.

Anyways, we had a airshow over the 4th of July weekend and here are some of my pics from it. They gave rides in the B-25 and B-29 both Saturday and Sunday so I was able to get many pictures. Doc is one good looking B-29, I like it more that FIFI because of the NMF.

I count 10 but ok Paddy, as long as they don't make contact.

Thanks for these guys. I'm with you John, doc looks great au naturel.

Great pics, thanks for posting,I saw Fifi at Johnson City in 2019,was really cool.
Back then it was $1600.00 to fly in the cockpit

There is a small museum not far from me in Port Clinton, OH. They have a B-25 and give rides. They also have a PT boat.

They also have some great cars.
