Airfix Mustang in the Shed

Since I called the tamiya Mustang done the tailwheel collapsed, oh well. Moving on since I got my Mustang grove on I'm trying a new organizational strategy with some of my rolling racks.

Not sure I'll use those barrels, the kit barrels look fine but need to be drilled out.

Sorry for the blur, the smaller rolling rack I have has these dividers I never really knew what to do with, now I do!

Starting to prime cockpit parts with Migs Acrylic Primer and it does this junk to me. I've already washed it off and will go back to Tamiya grey primer. Anyone have an idea why Migs makes primer hard to work with? Even when it dried it had a bad orange peel effect.

No idea what scheme to do yet, keen on another NMF. Suggestions?

No clue for you! Actually, I have lots of leftovers from the sheets I got sharkmouth schemes from. Happy to send them your way.

The first three guys, are they from the 357th Yoxford boys?
They are all of the same aircraft, with different pilots, from the 339th FG which consisted of the 503rd (D7 Squadron Code), 504th (5Q Squadron Code), and 505th (6N Squadron Code) Fighter Squadrons.

5Q*H of the 504th FS, 339th, FG:

I still haven't identified the aircraft with a sharkmouth. When I do, it will be on my list!

@moon puppy, your added challenge, if you choose to accept, will be this character:

"Lieutenant Stephen C Ananian a pilot of the 339th Fighter Group wearing the runway control officers' uniform of striped pyjama jacket and white baseball cap, on the runway at Fowlmere. Image via Stephen C Ananian, 339th Fighter Group."

I also added the names of the pilots next to the sharkmouth P-51D of the 505th FS, 339th FG.

Hmm, rather oxidized finish on that aluminum. I dig the man's jacket, not many men could pull that off back in the day. Hey he was born on Christmas Day and signed up for service on Dec 14 '41.

Baby Mine it is!
You got my hookup on decals? I got color laser with fresh toner ( Christmas present for my wife :rotf) so I could probably print it out. Would love to paint it but the Baby Mine script would be a bugger.

I have the Airfix P51 and was really glad to see that Cripes a mighty was a std choice. When i built my Eduard P51 i looked everywhere for Cripes and all i could find was a $25 set of decals which was nearly as much as the Eduard kit !!
As for MIG ? don't get me started. I have a couple of dozen bottles and all its any good for is fine brush touch up but even then the ready mix primers are really hard work. The only way to get any of the colours to work is... where you might use one coat of Tamiya you will need 6 coats of mig .. it has to be built up in dust coats, really if you can see the colour in your first coat its probably already to thick.

I've found I have a large stock of Migs paints, didn't realize it, hell getting old. I pulled out Vallejo Model Air colors and they went on fine without a primer. Go figure...

If you do Baby Mine I can do the script for you, Bob.
Well git'er done John cause I'm doing this.

Been a busy weekend but I've been working on the seat, Airfix gave the seat back some tuck and roll pattern, I've scrubbed away the molded on seatbelts and putty over the pattern. should have done it before assembling the seat but we always learn lessons when we doing this stuff don't we?

I'll put a man right on it, Bob!

The frustration and hope of learning is what keeps bringing us back to the bench, isn't it?

If you remember this build, RAAF Mustang IV, there are a couple of tweaks you can do. I added some radio and battery wiring and the fuel filler line behind the pilot. I left the seat belts but did thin down the seat side struts. The oil breather vent should be moved forward and up for a wartime aircraft. The kit position is for restored aircraft. The lower edge of the canopy needs to be thinned to get it to sit properly when it is in the open position.

No pressure.

Cheers,
Rich

Thank you Rich, yes I'm going to do the wires on the radio set, hadn't thought of the fuel feed, will do that also. I'll take a look at the oil vent but not sure i'll do much surgery here.

These Quinta Studio decals, if you can call them that, are amazing.

I'll clean up the paint job of course, still getting the feel of things just yet.
