About that future...

Remember thinking 3D printing wound be the death of model kits since you'll be printing kits at home?

Well the last thing I had to do during the shop rearrange was calibrate my printer. Once done, I went to print off something I've wanted for a long time, but never jumped on the resin kits out there: the Discovery One from 2001.

There are a few guys out there that did it, and I came across an amazingly detailed version, all broken down into parts (about 60 files) to print and assemble. I scaled it down to 60%, generated the code and since it was still early in the day, I started to print the main sphere. At 60%, it would be about 3.5 inches wide, not too shabby and since the model is long, wouldn't take up much space.

The front half of the sphere is 611 layers, each layer .1mm. I started printing at 2PM and went on to do other things, dropping in on it every so often. At 4, it was on layer 42 (the early layers are the smallest too). By my guess, it'd at least be another hour to hit 60, one tenth of the job, so my guess is 30 hours. That's just for the sphere, not the other pile of parts, etc.

I guess I'll be looking for a resin kit again.

Don't get me wrong, the printer is an amazing tool and saves me a ton of time, but the dreams of printing a kit got a cold dose of reality. :blink

Give it time, it's advancing quantum leaps as we speak.

They have two "prototype printers" here that crapped out 2 years ago, some engineer attempted to "fix" it by soldering something, never soldered before, did he give it to the electrical maintenance guy with 40+ years soldering skills...nooo...but I digress...
They are bringing in forklifts to remove those printers this week. They are maybe 6 years old...maybe?

Now you have one on your desktop.

:popcorn

Jeff, is it one of those that pronts the hot plastic, or one of the high res ones that uses the UV resin?

Bob, if it weren't for actual hands on technicians that "really" know how stuff works we would still be using smoke signals to communicate. Too many idiot engineers that have the diploma but couldn't build a paper bag. (About like some doctors  )

Don't get me started about engineers. I have a saying at work, at the root of every catastrophe is an engineer.

I would like to have one of those 3d printers too, I think it would be neat to print 3-d weapons and accoutremont of various type

Well the first problem is you have to be able to draw them on CAD. That's a skill I haven't had a chance to figure out.
