A G3M2 Nell in 1/48 the hard way

Wings and tail on, some minor body work to do but no worse that many injected molded kits I've built. from here on in it's just like any other kit. Still need to mask all the clear parts which may take till next weekend :gogo

Thanks for all the encouraging comments and thanks for looking !

Better you than me.. I do not have to skill nor the patience to work on a vac kit. I am certain that this will be a splendid kit.

Well, it took almost a week, not continuous of course, taking breaks when ever my mind started to go numb but all the clear parts are masked and installed. Before I could install the main canopy I needed to install the overhead console with the throttle quadrant. The Nell had this mounted on the ceiling like many seaplanes. The kit supplied throttle quadrant was resin and it was embedded in a mass of flash most of which was thicker than the throttles themselves so I decided to toss it and make my own. I took a piece of half round styrene rod cut to the length needed and using a razor saw cut four slots into it. I than installed some PE levers from the surplus box. The wheel is for turning the direction finding loop antenna. The result...

And installed inside the canopy...

With the clear parts installed it was time for a coat of primer. I found the white plastic was very difficult to see defects on and now with the primer I can go back and fix what I missed.

Once that is done it's on to color. The top side will have a similar scheme as the Betty did, I'm still debating whether to go with NMF on the underside or gray. Most profiles show gray but in black and white photos unless you can see a reflection of some kind it's hard to tell gray from oxidized metal.

Thanks for looking !
