40 Willys Pickup Street Rod

Hey Jeff! Yep, that's the bane of all those kits. Filling the hole in the hood almost always leads to ghosting of the filler through the paint. I've had best results adding a layer of spot putty, I like Nitro Stan, although it's hard to find anymore. Bondo makes a spot filler that one step, similar to the Nitro Stan. I apply a thin layer wider than the area, let it dry, then wet sand it with a block, then re prime. Makes the imperfections disappear. Looking good so far! My front end was so badly off, I had to pose it with the front end tilted to hide the gaps!! :idonno

Thanks Iron Mike!

Last night I just coated the the top of the hood with a thin coat of 3M spot putty! I also coated both ends of the bed too! (y) I hope with changing the floor mounting I beat the hood alignment issue. :hmmm

I was not sure if I was going in the right direction. Your tip took my mind off it. Really thanks. I also think Im sanding too much with heavy grit sand paper. Been using 220 to rough in and then hit it with 320 to take the scratches out. Never dawned on me to wet sand it before primer. BTW got the same issue with my Revell Willys Coupe hood too. I do not see why it should not work this time. :D

Thanks Moon Puppy!

Yeah the hood has a flat spot at the back and nice big square.

I did the flat black and thought maybe that will be its color. Seems to be the in thing right now with street rods. I really thinking it will be a green. Then again the flat black does kinda look nice.

I see it now you mention it...well battle damage is out of the quesiton..what about adding a scoop?

I see more replies after this so i'll read some more..oh, wait, that's what you're hiding, a scoop..I'll just sit over here in the corner and watch.

You must really love the lines of the Willys to see that flat spot... I know I love it.

Try to crease a super thin sheet of polystyrene (coffee cup lid works) and blend it in. Otherwise, it would have to be stretched sprue bead which gets faired in.

Regards,

I smeared the top with putty last night. If that does not work for me I'm going to try this.

You know I'm not sure why model cars kick my donkey so bad. I've been payed to do body work on and paint on real cars. (the #1 reason I stay away from model cars) I'm having so much fun with the last three I'm working on! Worst case I'll cut it back out and build an injector manifold for the 4.6.

I did get some sanding done. I cut down a soft sanding block I have and used wet/dry 400 grit. All done wet sanding. Hope to get a couple 2 or 3 coats of primer on it tomorrow.

This is the putty I use for all my model kits. The last tube lasted 20+ years.

I may have found the fit issue with the flip front end that Iron Mike wrote about.

Three spots -

1) up against the windshield - hood sits to high
bp054.jpg

2 and 3) right and left fenders
bp053.jpg

and that is it for today I just got called in to work

Yep, you found it!! That's why they call it AMT, Always More Trouble!! I posed my hood tilted forward and called it good! You gonna fix yours? (y)

Yeah I'm going to go head and try to fix it. What could go wrong? :pinch:

First cut the hood down each side, then add to the fenders on the flip side. Thats the plan and soon as you have a plan it will change. :idonno

Thanks guys for all the help so far!

MrT did you get a promotion? (y)

Well this drove me crazy thinking about it today. So here it goes "The repair"

I started by sanding off the primer
bp055.jpg

stuck on some sheet plastic
bp056.jpg

trimmed up the sheet a little and turned it into a sci-fi walking gasser front end!! Cloths pins you got to love them. Yes I seem to be getting a Willys juck yard on my paint box.
bp057.jpg

filed it down some (should have let it sit overnight - not dry totally)
bp058.jpg

marked the cut line with some masking tape
bp060.jpg

hacked off the top of the hood assembly
bp061.jpg

test fit, now should I lay the front peak of the hood back?

I guess I am not the only modeler hacking up kits here! Good on you, I am sure you will get the repair done.

Regards,

Cutting things up makes me nervious, but looks like your doing a great job.
