40 Willys Pickup Street Rod

Sherman 18

Master at Arms
Ive posted this once before. I know I have :hmmm Well the photos were pretty crappy anyways.

Okay this is a kit I drag out once or twice a year and play with and then put it up. Now that it is getting close for paint. I just, and that is just mite keep it out and put some color on it. The kit is AMT's 40 Willys Coupe/Pickup. I took the drive train, suspension, frame cross members, wheels/tires, and front seat from AMTs 32 Ford Woody kit. The build has been going smooth for me. That usually does not happen when I do something like this. I usually end up throwing it out. The Willys kit is good as the Woody kit. I wanted a modern Street Rod look with a Gasser feel.

The frame, had to narrow the rear for the 8.8 Ford rear end and bigger wheels/tires. I ramoved the Willys cross member and the 32 Woody. The front susension cross member is from the Woody kit.

4.6 Ford engine and AOD transmission set into place along with the rear end. I added blocks for the rear end drag links today. During mock up I found out they are way to big. Now the bed does not fit.

Front seat from the Woody kit

The bed I shortened at the rear, cut out the wheel wells, added rear wheel wells from the Woody, and molded every thing in. Ready for primer.

Front body, I filled in the hole in the hood. Then have been sanding, putty, sand, prime, sand, putty over and over
I think these parts are just about ready for paint.

That is some sweeeet building (y) (y) (y) Because of you and Iron Mike, might have to stop at the car models section! Look forward to more of this one.:) :)

Randy

Hey Jeff! If you are like me, you'll be WAY sick of yellow plastic before you're done with that monster! I like the mods you've done and the Phantom Vicky parts look right at home! What color scheme are you planning?

Thanks Randy, Moon Puppy, Iron Mike and Terry!!!!!

Iron Mike, the color will not be YELLOW! I'm thinking a green, or some kind of two tone not sure yet. That will be the hard part.

MP, sanding yeah  :blink this is why I like armor. These cars all become to real at this point before paint.

well time to go and make more dust. (y)

Thanks guys!!!!!!!!!!!!

I plan to have it all in primer this weekend. I hope I can find a long enough break from the Barret-Jackson on speed

Yep going to OD on over priced cars this weekend :eek:hyeah

Sometime on Saturday a real Gasser Willys Pu (same year as the model kit) will cross the block. Got to see what is brings

Funny... watching the auctions depress me but I don't want to turn the channel either!

Tim

I know what you mean Hood. I think 2/3 of the worlds Corvettes, Z-28s, Shelby/Boss Mustangs, and Hemi cars are there. I like the price some of the cars bring. In the way if I'm ever struck by lighting, win the Lotto on the same day, I hear of/find a 20 mile Boss 429 Mustang Ex-dragcar in a a barn, they just want hauled off because it is in the way. :idonno

In real life I find a 6 cylinder rust out bad coupe that has been wrecked in the front end and the owner sits a watchs the auction and thinks it is worth 20k.

That ex-Gasser only got 46K :blink

It is a nice car show that comes to you in the living room! (y)

Broke down a primered most of the PU. The body man is not happy at all  . I bent up some old coat hangers to hold some of the parts. Worked 50/50, well worked great until I knocked off the bed :pinch: Happy that it is only in the primer stage.

I removed the mounts for the rear drag link, and took a photo with the bed mocked up. I'm going to have to redo the rear suspension.

everything layed out before primer

I put a couple coats on. I'm still having a problem where I filled the hole in the hood.

Here you can see where the bed cracked from the tumble on the floor

and the back side of the cab is still not rounded right. I beieve this has been caused by uneven sanding and sand paper grit.

primered the frame also it was not ready yet, but hey I still had some primer mixed
p013.jpg

the bottom of the floor I thought was better too

I let everything sit overnight and then today repainted with flat black.

Do you see that at spot!

What flat spot? I don't see a flat spot. But what a cool looking build you got going on. I actually like the way the shadow is hitting the flat black as it is right now. That would be cool to capture that in paint.

Thanks Moon Puppy!

Yeah the hood has a flat spot at the back and nice big square.

I did the flat black and thought maybe that will be its color. Seems to be the in thing right now with street rods. I really thinking it will be a green. Then again the flat black does kinda look nice.

There it is! :( AHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhh been chasing this ..................
bp030.jpg

I hit the bad spots I could see with 320 and 400 grit. Now the high and low spots can come out. There is a lot more than I thought.

Oh I baked the parts under a light for about 4 hours before sanding. Still a little tacky.
Wow glad I did not mold this up, to make copies.

Cab looks really good. Some fine light sanding and it is ready!

You must really love the lines of the Willys to see that flat spot... I know I love it.

Try to crease a super thin sheet of polystyrene (coffee cup lid works) and blend it in. Otherwise, it would have to be stretched sprue bead which gets faired in.

Regards,
