2026 Plastic Surgeons Meetings and Other Model Fun!

The 2025/26 school year has come to a close.
My Sp. Ed. teaching job at the school is ended. I thanked my homeroom students for teaching me so much and welcoming me to the their Whitter family. I'm sure these 5th graders taught me more than I did them!
I played a few final pranks on students before my departure, partially to cover how misty I got on my way out the door.
When asked if I was coming back next year, I replied "Everything is a negotiation. We'll see."

The Mona Lisa was presented Wednesday afternoon while I was on the the PM Bus run. By the accounts of the teaching staff, she was a HUGE hit with Mrs. Borgmeyer during her retirement ceremony! Everyone else had a good laugh as well. The "Mr. Rhino Mystique" is forever carved into the history of this fine group of educators.

The District cancelled the actual last day of school. A beloved teacher, Mrs. O'Meara, passed away after a long painful fight with cancer. God rest her. In order to allow all those that knew her to attend her services, school was cancelled. Not for a stupid demonstration, as we have seen in other parts of the country, but for dignity and honor. Had it been otherwise, Tara Paul may well have had a mutiny on her hands!

The final, sultry Thursday PM bus route was executed with safety and dispatch, as we came smokin' back to the Transportation Department 14 minutes ahead of schedule! I got the ol' "Dust Buggy" all the way up to a howlin' 64 MPH at one point!
For once, I didn't have to monkey with locking any gates!

Bus two-three is swept, swamped, mopped, squeegeed and washed. Standing tall, ready for a new school year.
My Sweetie and I are both off for the month of June. I am ready for a break.

I predict Runza's, singing, visits with my nerdy model friends, Club meetings, TLAR molds and castings, sleeping past day-break and going to the head whenever I please or feel the need.

4 June, 2026. An interesting day.
The anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of Midway.
The anniversary of my Dad's sudden death.
Coffee pot: Crapped out. 1 1/2 cups of coffee is not enough for any modeling endeavor, even when a guy is on vacation. Attempting repairs, I scalded myself in a delicate spot. Sheyit!!
Coffeemakers are expendable appliances when you use water from a well. I should let the durn thang die, peacefully.

Contamination/old material produced the dreaded pink gooey bubble curse. This has happened more often in the last couple of years. I've made 100 or more molds since 2015 and never picked this much goo from my Masters. All 4 new molds had the same result. BLAST!!
Other activities went pretty well, by comparison.
Then, we actually made it to a Plastic Surgeons club meeting!
Behold and be amused!!

9 members braved thunderstorms and driving rain to arrive at this evening's gathering.

Roscoe brings an old favorite from his collection. Italeri's 1/35 M-7 Priest. Ross claims, and rightly so, that the vintage 1/35 Priest kit stands up well to more modern Armor model kits. Exrernal and iternal details abound with room for additional ammp and stowage to give it the lived-in war-machine feel! Having been released and re-boxed by Tamiya and Revell of Germany, and even re-released by Italeri in 2021. Academy/Airfix 2007 M-7 kits look strangely very similar, and even include "rubber-band" tracks.

Anyway, Ross built this kit long enough ago that he says it may have been his first go with Polly S acrylic OD green.
Given Ross' previous use of non-standard, petroleum-based thinners, I gave his model a compulsory sniff. No fumes remain.

Nate Stevens is continuing to plug away at the 1/25 scale miniature of the first vehicle his Kowboy Kustoms workshop produced. He says the AMT kit assembles a little like the real thing.

I've been building, in spite of my lack of club meeting attendance. If you have followed this thread, some of these models may look familiar to you. I cain't say how good it was to see some of my oldest friends and bang on about models, modeling and other subjects.
In other news, Ty Stevens will be tying the knot with his sweetheart Timmy (Timmy is a girl. Don't worry!) on 26 September, 2026.
Congratulations to the young bride and groom in advance. This blessed event means that the model show season is at an end for my 1/700 USS Entemedor and 1/350 USS Guitarro "Bottom Gun" builds, as their final show appearance would have been The Eastern Iowa Model and Vendor show.
I had a plan to sell most of my car model kits at this show, but.........
Real Life is more important than models.

I'm thrilled to see you getting back to the meetings again, it's always a blast seeing these. Nice work all around, I love the wood effect in the truck bed!

Joe asks me to prepare and bring potato salad to today's Plastic Surgeons cook-out. Since Tootie Young's passing, Potato Salad has been renamed "Tootie Salad". Curt's wife made the BEST chunky tater salad, ever!
I made it up Wednesday, in order for the flavors to mix properly but I've never prepared this much Tootie salad before.
20260611_104608.jpg
Of course I used Duke's! Testing reveals that this batch is quite "tootie". It has been said that you can tell a good potato salad by the scent of opening the container. If it smell like a fart, you're golden! By this standard, this is a very good Tootie salad!
Curt chose to work this Saturday, so my funny friend will not be joining us. I did call and tell him some horrible old, jokes.
More details on the car-ride to Colo and the cook-out as this enthralling story develops!

Don't know about the fart part but Dukes?! I know I unenlightened friends have no idea what Dukes is.
To put it simply, If you ain't got Dukes, you ain't got Mayonnaise. Put the meat and bread away. It's a southern thing y'all.

I age my chunky Tootie salad a little in a sealed container before I serve it. Like overnight at least. I like to give the flavors a chance to mingle properly. Thus, the satisfying aroma on opening the container!

It is worth mentioning that yesterday was Don Barry's birthday. His sister Jeanette, sent some fairly surprising pictures of a very much younger Don. It is hard to believe our Big Buddy has been gone almost 3 years.

The "German Enclave" in Colo, Iowa has a new, solid, East-facing sundeck. (No, you don't go to Colo for a colo-noscapy, silly!)
Joachim and Jerry busy themselves with the cooking-out part of this gathering of friends, with little regard for the occasional rain squall. The gemutlischkeit of the Lotz home is becoming well known among Plastic Surgeons and their wimmin-peeple.

Skulking about the basement led to a couple of collection pictures. Aimee's Wall Of Yarn can be glimpsed behind the crocheters busying themselves about the serving table.

18 people gathered from near and far to share an afternoon of quips, puns, lunch and model musings. Of note, good ol' George Stevens made the drive all the way from Thornton, CO to attend the Surgeons cook-out and see some Iowa friends. I wished for more 1-on-1 visiting with "Dad" but I also must be willing to share and play nice. Curt had to work, so he was missed.

We left the balance of the Tootie salad with the Lotz' and came home with some brats, shotgun shell treats and buns. It was a fine afternoon and trouble free car ride!

It was fine to see Curt Young, after a long hiatus! We saw him at the pet store and at Hobbytown both! I didn't do a very good job of recording members in attendance this time. Mark Johnson and Francisco are omitted completely.
Seen here are Carlton Burger (red) "Hey Bob" Haag (blue) Nate and Trennis Stevens (Black) and we all recognize Curt, yes?
If you want to have some fun, infer that Nathan Stevens is really a Millennial. Then step back.

Mark Johnson is resin casting drag slicks for his 1/16 scale Top Fuel dragsters. He's using Smooth-On Smooth Cast 300. Easy 50/50 mix, no need to pressurize and speedy cure.
Mark has one mold that makes 1 half slick at a time. He belt-sands these to whatever width he wishes for. Clever, no?
Mark is REALLY excited about the drag racing museum at Speedway, in Lincoln NE and hopes to display his fabricated digger builds therein! Our chosen scales and subjects differ greatly, but Mark and I have more in common as model makers, than I once imagined.

NOTE! Mark's 3 big top-fueler builds are NOT from kits. He scaled up the 1/24th scale models to make his own in his favorite scale!

This is a dandy chance to plug Mark's upcoming 22 August car model show!

Carlton brought his completed build of the vintage Monogram 1/48 Northrup P-61B Black Widow. The original kit decals were cashed-in so Carlton bought a sheet of Print Scale P-61B decals. He commented he found these to be scale-thin and slightly elastic when applying them. Odd. He prefers the red spinners and red cowl flaps, so he chose "Cooper's Snooper" for his Widow. This is also the nekkedist nose art choice of the decal sheet. Too naughty!!

Hey Bob has what looks like the Monogram '57 Chevy funny car body, that may become (now let me see if I have this right) The 1957 El Belairshelibucamino. There's a mouthful for ya! A pick-up, anyway. I think.

After enough car model building Nate Stevens has the model airplane assembly line fired up again! 2 Revell Ag 1/72 FW TL Flitzers, 3 DML 1/72 Me-1101 Nachtjager fighters and 1 DML 1/72 Arado AR-234. The Ar-234 will be an historical build of an actual Luftwaffe jet, but the others will be "What-If" subjects that Millennial model makers seem fond of. The I/P is from one of the Messerschmitt jets. The more complex 1990's DML kits build less readily than the Revell of Germany models do.

This was the new era of photo-etched parts for DML kits and these are mainly stainless steel etchings. Heating/Annealing doesn't faze them. The was a "red dot sale" on at Hobbytown. 50% off the tag price. Nate picked up a vintage AMT 1/24 scale Ford City Delivery truck model kit at a very attractive price!

The plastic model kit selection continues to wane at our club meeting place. The Gundam and R/C kits are flourishing, if either of these are your "Thing". I had a long text exchange with Big Dave Bos about model supplies I wish to buy at Hobbytown and another subject that needs no mention here.

Ima thinkin' we could spring for supper for the Hobbytown late guy's supper. A B-Bop's burger, fries and chocolate shake could go a long way to showing appreciation to our Club night "babysitter". Hungry Guys are often Grumpy Guys.

The R/C company that bought Evergreen seems not to have picked up this line. It must be sourced elsewhere.
It seems since Brandon at Squadron stopped selling wholesale, Dave must place minimum orders at other distributors that sometimes cost between $1,000.00 and $5,000.00. The plastic kit choices are limited to Tamiya, Revell and AMT/Round II.
That would be a ton of Evergreen styrene plastic and model kits at wholesale prices! A Guy can't go wrong with Tamiya!
I began to better appreciate the enormity of running a retail Hobbytown location. There are a lot of moving parts and as Brandon Lowe once said "You cain't be good at everything.

Dave's bread and butter is R/C with a large selection of Bandai Gunpla kits. The wants of the 20-some plastic model makers in our club will not likely soon be met. I get it. The days of having the Shop support the IPMS club fade, not so very slowly into "In the old days...." reminisces.

Sourcing my needed Evergreen plastic can easily be down from a model railroad shop, so that's what I did. That's what Evergreen was originally for. Model Railroad guys. With so many TLAR projects underway, I don't build or buy many of "other people's" models.
Londyn Geraldine .jpg

One new arrival in Ankeny last Thursday was a 1/1 scale baby girl! Londyn Geraldine Bos. Big Dave and Mary made this one!
Ain't she a Peach?!

I brought some more of the models I had been making during our school year club meeting break.

Chief Tom White's "Bottom Gun" Micro Mir 1/350 USS Guitarro, SSN-695, Sturgeon class honor model build. CPO White was her Helmsman in the 1980's.
My 1/700 waterline Fleet Schnokel and GUPPY III Boat builds. USS Requin, SSK-481, USS Torsk, SS-423, rescuing the crew of a downed P6M SeaMaster, USS Clamagore, SS-343 and USS Tigerfish/Ronquil, of "Ice Station Zebra" movie fame, SSN-509
I finally got "The Submarine" out of my system. Pfoof! I feel better now!
20260618_184641.jpg
TLAR Models kit 425, USCGC Orcas. A 1/350 scale 110' Island class cutter was also included. US Coast Guard subjects are a staple at TLAR Models. I did pass around brand new castings of the new 1/350 full-hull 52' SPC-HWX Motor lifeboat kit. It was a fun, but lightly attended meeting. I may make the 2 July gathering, but my Sweetie has to work the next morning, so she may not.
Happy Modeling! See you in the funny papers!
